and they offer tangible and incontrovertible proof of the antiquity of the Jain religion, of its early existence, very much in its present form. The series of twenty four Pontiffs (Tirthankaras) each with his distinctive emblem was evidently firmly believed in at the beginning of the Christian Era" Further the inscriptions are replete with information as to the organization of the Jain church in sections known as Gana, Kula. and Sakha, and supply excellent illustrations of the Jain booksBoth inscriptions and sculptures give interesting details proving the existence of Jain nuns and the influential position in the Jain church occupied by women.
" अर्थात् इन खोजों से जैनियों के ग्रन्थों के वृत्तान्तों का बहुत अधिकता से समर्थन हुआ है और वे जैनधर्म की प्राचीनता व उसके बहुत प्राचीन समय में भी आज ही की भाँति प्रचलित होने के प्रत्यक्ष और अकाट्य प्रमाण हैं । ईस्वी सन् के प्रारम्भ में ही चौबीस तीर्थङ्कर उनके चिन्हों सहित अच्छी तरह से माने जाते थे, बहुत से लेख जैन सम्प्रदाय के गणों के या शाखाओं के विभक्त होने के समाचारों से भरे पड़े हैं और वे जैन ग्रन्थों के अच्छे समर्थक भी हैं।"
इनमें के कई एक लेख व चित्र आदि डाँ० व्हूलर के " एफिमाफिया इण्डिका" नामक पत्र की पहिली जिल्द में छपवाये हैं जिन्हें जरूरत हो वहाँ से देखलें ।
