(II) And, wherever there were no medicinal herbs beneficial to men and beneficial to animals, everywhere they have been caused to be imported and planted. (III) In the same way, wherever there were no roots and fruits, everywhere they have been caused to be imported and planted. (II) The (foltóiving) was ordered by me twelve years after my coronation. (III) Everywhere in my dominions, the officers, (called) Rajjuka (and) Prädebika, shall set out every five years on a circuit for inspection (throughout their charges), as much for their other duties as for this (special) purpose of preaching Dharma (in the following words) : (IV) " Meritorious is obedience to mother and father. (V) Meritorious is liberality to friends, acquaintances and relatives and to the Sramaņas and Brāhmaņas. (VI)" Meritorious is abstention from the slaughter of living beings. (VII) " Meritorious is to spend little (and) to store little." (VIII) And the Council of Ministers) shall order the officers' about the observance of these rules with reference to (both my) intention and (my) words. 1 The letters in some passages of the following lines of the odiot are not clear on the impressions. • The form expected is vijitasi. * Chakravarti : Oviydgata apao. • Chakravarti: p[w]liad picha. There is a short line dividing this edict from Rock Ediot VI. • The expression may possibly also mean in the twelfth year after my coronation.' The Yuktas are regarded generally as a class of officers like the Rajjuka and Prādesika. Of. Ind., Oulle Vol. I, pp. 308 ff. The Prädekika appears to have boon the ruler of a group of districte and the Rajjuks that of a single distriot.
