________________ 12 nprovement in texture was made; so Iso in Monghyr. In the Southal Farganas, both jolakas, tantis and aboriginals did coarse weaving. At Kishanganj in Purnea district, lungis and patanis were nade. Throughout Orises and ChotaNagpun Pisions coarse cloths were woven, ja sully for local consumation. A compared between this account and the earlier accounts show what a revolution for the time being has been made in the industry by the new factor of an inereased local demand. The following lines from the recent Report of Mr. J. N. Gupta who was put on special duty to inquire into the the digenous present condition of ndu-tries in Eastern Bengal and Am thin the same light on the subject. It J, Lowever," goes on Mr. Gupta to say, "as if the downward course taken by this, the most important indigen industry of the province, has at t been checked, and a slow Int per eptible improvement is visible his reeverywhere. Mr. Cuntaing, in nt rent remarks, "The Swadeshi vat of the last two years is a new factor stimulating production and eating a demand. I find that this has led to the improvement of the weavers. in parts of the Presidency and Burdwn Divisions, that is to say, many weaves who had given up their caste pation have returned to it." The same phenomenon ha al een noticed in Madras by Mr. Chatterton, who "The interest in hand-weaving is marly due to the Swadeshi movement, and most of the hand-weaving factories ow their existence to the enthusiasm engendered at the bath of a new political mevement." It is fortunate that a similar revival of the hand a weaving industry is also not in the prinpal entres of the weving industry in East Bengal. There are no reliable tigures, however, to sou what the real in rease in the volume of this industry has been, but figures for the inpoort of fore ign and Indian cotton pier goods and yarn taken from the Divisional reports Throw Hotue light on the point. From the figure it would appear (1) That in the Dacea and Chittagong Dixons, the import of European goo N gaty diminished in 1906-07: whereas Amilar decline was prominently notice ad in Rajshahi Divions, in 1905. (2) The import of yarn, though thu tuating, also showed a market inerea, sally in 1901-05 when the total impett of yarn, Indian and foreign, was 3000 maunda in excus of the naports in 1:02-03 The increase in the imports of In lan yarns was specially noticeable in it from 250 maunds in hittagong 12-408, to 3,674 maunds in 1906-07. From the report on the trado of this pavince in 19-07, it would appear that 52041 mannda of cotton; e-goods were imported into Ensteru Bengal districts the province, whereas 1-11,219 maunds of yard were imported in the same year. Je wohi ths appear that at least onef of the total demand for cotton faits supplied by the hand-looms. E PANSION IN BRANCHES. Taking individul distri ts, we findthat the development has been the greatest in those district which have been able to supply any expanding demand for any special class of gods For instance, the indusay soms to have progressed most in Noakhali, Comilla, Pabna, and Faridpur. All tuo districts, besides producing the ai saris and duris turned out a very lar quantity of check and chut both thick and thin, au nitable the making of coat, shirts, of the wearin; apparel tnosti MARMAYOGIN in rogue now. In Comilla the inerense is reported to be fully 32 per cent.; for whereas the total export of the cloth from that district to other parts of Bongal amounted hardly to a lakh' of rupees before, now the exports come to over a lakh and a half, I myself went to the Thursday hat at Conilla, and found that stuff valued at 200 rupees at least was brought up chiefly for export. There are two such seats in a week at Comiila itself. In the divisional report of Rajshahi for 1906-07 the following occurs: "The Collector of Pabna reports that cottonhas and weavers are hardly able to the growing demand of the for eign and local markets. It is said that the number of hand-Jooms has increased in Pabna, and members of the weaving class who had taken to other pursuits have now returned to their caste profe. ion." In Noakhali it was found that the import of European cotton piece goods. has gradually alles o from 2, 850 bales in 1905-06 to 94 a ales in 1907-08, whereas that of the Inan piece goods had gradually increased from 453 bales in 1905-06 to 4, 633 bales in 1907 08. The export of locally manufactured cloth also greatly increased this period till it renched 720 manuds in 1300, though it fell off again to 380 muanda in 1907. It would thus appear that the textile manufactures of Bengal have been greatly increased, and they have got such a large hole consumption that the foreign piece-goods trade of Bengal have come to a grave crisis. LECKY DAY SALES To show how far the affairs stood for the worse we simply quote the following from an article entitled Piece Goods Trade: The Present Depression" appear. ing in the well-known Anglo-Indian ly of Statenman of October, 13, 1:08. "There does not seem," goes on the Anglo-Indian Organ to say, "to be much room for doubt that the pioce-goods trade in India has now reached critical period in its history. Last Monday was the wellknown Lucky Day on which Marwari traders are wont to enter into large for want contracts, believing it to be a really lucky day for commencing their specula tions and merchants usually look onders for thousands of packages, the average being something between * and 50,000 cases but the sales effered on Monday were exceedingly poor and for all practical purposes this, Luky Hay sales must be reganida failure. It has been an open that this class of goods has scarcely moved at all and that there has been an enormous overstock. during the last two years. Several causes have conspired to make it exceedingly difficult for most persona engaged in the trade to come out of the business wi bout at any rate having to meet heavy loss. As might have been expectod, sane traders have bee already forced int the Insolvency Court at least a of them being a big holder of stock, and it is feared that the next month or two will find a number of other firms in the hands of the Official Assignee. On the top of some more or less largo recent involvencies of this sort comes the adjudication of Mesars. Showdass Bissessur Dans Yet another application of the kind, of which, it is anid, there, i a regular crop almost ready to be pa before the Court was heard by Mr. Jus tice Sharfuddin yesterday. In this matter Babn Charu Chandra Bose applied on behalf of his clients, Chotay Lall Le hminarain, for an order of adjudication under section 9 of the Act, against, Messrs Tolaram Shamshuka, the principal proprietor of which is Lunkaram. *** It is thus evident from the above ia and opinions of the Anglo-Indin. Taily that foreign piece-goods trade of bengal has been at a stake for the last few years, and consequently native piece-goods trade has becoine one of successful concerns of the day in the United Bengal.
