GENERAL EDITORIAL
Bhāvasena-Traividya belongs to Mūlasamgha and Senagaņa. He is well-known as a successful disputant. He bears the title Traividya which indicates his proficiency in Vyākaraṇa, Nyāya and Siddhānta. He is to be assigned to the latter half of the thirteenth century A. D. Additional details about him and his works are already given in the Introduction to the Visvatattva--Prakāśa, published, in this Series, as 'No. 16.
One more work, the Pramāprameya, of Bhāvasena is being presented in this volume along with Hindi translation etc. The title of the text is differently mentioned by the author himself. It is called Pramāprameya in the opening verse, but at the end of the work it is described to be the first Pariccheda, Pramāņa-nirūpaņa by name, of the Siddhā. intasāra-Mokşaśāstra. Obviously then it is a part of a bigger
work which has not come to light so far. Its contents, i however, make it a self-sufficient unit. In a way the topics dealt with here are complimentary to those in the Visvatattva-Prakāśa which too, like this work, is an opening portion of a bigger treatise.
The Pramāprameya is a manual and presents in a simple : Style the details about Pramāņa as understood in Jaina metaphysics and logic. The treatment is more of the Nyāya pattern and very well suited to introduce the students into the preliminaries of Jaina Nyāya. The author's discussion about anumāna, ābhāsa, vāda etc. is exhaustive. Bhāvasena has presented a useful manual the duscussion in which is founded on the fundamentals of Jainism but absorbs a good deal of the Nyāya school.
