________________ Prasama Rati Preface Il Roll The teacher who initiated him to monkhood was Ghoga nandi s'ramana, the holder of eleven argas, and his teacher's teacher was sivari, the best among vācakas. The teacher who bestowed knowledge to him (vidyāguru) was a pupil of Mundapāda. His native place was the town of Nyagrodhiki, and his yotra Kaubhişani. His father's name was Svāti and mother's Umi of Vatsi yotra. He was initiated into monkhood in Uccanāgura s'ākhā which originated from SantiSreņika. This Umāsvāti vācakas'ri, bearing into his heart the teachings--handed down through the heredity of teachersof Arhat and finding the poople doluded and made miserable by petty scriptures, boing provoked by compassion towards all beings, composed, while on sacred travel, at the city of Kusumapura, [ Pataliputral i. e modern I'atna in Bihar, ] a clear s'astra called Tattvärthādhigama. Although we cannot get any definite idea about his date from this, we can at least know this, that he is, having flourished in the time of the dasapūrvadhara, a very ancient ācārya who hailed in the fifth or sixth century of Vikrama. That the commentator Sri Haribhadra Süri flourished in the latter half of the twelth century V.S. is certain; for the commentator himself in prasasti sloka no. 4 tells us: “This commentary is writen during Mahārāja Jayasiṁhadeva's rule at Anahilapura Pātana in V. S. 1185." Although one cannot Il pull a r aha 4t 7 ngrie Ec1-Vividha-Tirtha-Kalpa, Singhi Jaina 1. Cf. fere qualsi urfayzi w Granthamala Series, No. 10, p. 68.
