Whatever keeps one's soul in its real nature is religion and whatever prohibits one from remaining in self's nature and taking interest in non-soul things is non-religion. In short, to be in such a state that the soul is not doing any undesirable acts like rāga, dveșa and bhāvai.e. it is not in unnatural state (vibhāva), but is in its nature, is the best religion.
About the means of removing misery, he says that the only way to be free from misery and sorrow is ātmajñāna and ātma-jñāna is not possible without good thoughts, and to be in good thoughts is not possible is one indulges in undesirable associations of men and events.
