GUPTA DYNASTY.
Race Inscription of King Skandha Cupta at Junagadh, dated year 138
oj the Gupta era.
This inscription is engraved on the face of the same rock on which the Asoka and Rudra Dama Inscriptions are to be found at Junågach in Saurashtra. The face of the rock looks to the south measuring 10' 3" x 7 and appears to have been engraved without being polished. There are in all 29 lines. The lower portion and some portion in the middle of the inscription have suffered much and the letters there are quite illegible.
It mentions that in the time of Skanda Gupta, the Governor of Saiiraslatra was Parnadatta, whose son Chakrapalit caused to be built an embankment across the Sudarsana lake which had burst on account of heavy rains. The year 138 of the Gupta era would correspond with A. D. 457.
The language of the composition is Sanskrit, the character being of the Gupta period.
TRANSLITZBATION.
१ सिमम् भिवमभिमतभोग्यां नैककालोपैनीता त्रिदशपतिसुखार्थ यो बलेराजहार कमलनिलयनायाः शाश्वतं
धाम लक्षायाः २ स जयति विजेतातिर्विष्णुरयन्तजिष्णुः । तदनु जयति शश्वत् श्रीपरिक्षिप्तवक्षाः स्वभुजजनितवीयों राज
राजाधिरानः नरपति ३ भुजगानां मानदर्पोकणानां प्रतिकृतिगरुडामानिविषश्नावकती। नृपतिगुणानकेतः स्कंदगुप्तः पृथुश्रीः चतुरुद
धिजरत्नां स्फीतपर्यन्तदेशां ४ अवनिमवनतारियश्चकारात्मसंस्था पितरि सुरसखित्वं प्राप्तयत्यात्मशक्त्या । अपित्र जितमिव सेन प्रथय(य?)ति
यशांसि यस्य रिपवोपि आमलभग्नदपा नि(इ.)व बदने म्लेच्छदेशेषु । ५ क्रमेण बुध्या निपुर्ण प्रधार्य ध्यात्वा च कृत्स्नान् गुणदोषहेतून व्यपेत्य सान्मनुजेंद्रपुत्रांडक्ष्मीः स्वयं यं
वरांचकार । तस्मिन्नृपे शासति नैव कश्रिद्धर्मादपेतो मनुजः प्रजासु ६ आतों दरिद्रो व्यसनी कदयों दण्ड्यो न वा यो भृशपीडितः स्यात् । एवं स जित्वा पृथिवीं समनां भग्नान
दपान् द्विपतश्चकुल्या सर्वेषु देशेषु विधाय गोप्तन् संचिन्तयामास बहुमकारम् । स्यात्कानुरूपो मतिमान्विनीतो मेधास्मृतिभ्यामनपेतभावः सत्याजवौदार्यनयोपपन्नमाधर्यदाक्षिण्ययोन्वितश्च । भक्तोनुरक्तो
