विवेचन-मध्यलोकवर्ती असंख्यात द्वीप-समुद्रों के मध्य में पहला द्वीप जम्बूद्वीप है और उसके बाद यथाक्रम से आगे-आगे समुद्र और द्वीप हैं। असंख्यात द्वीप-समुद्रों के अन्त में स्वयंभूरमण नामक समुद्र है। ये सभी द्वीप-समुद्र दूने-दूने विस्तार वाले, पूर्व-पूर्व समुद्र को वेष्टित किये हुए और चूड़ी के आकार वाले हैं। लेकिन जम्बूद्वीप लवणसमुद्र से घिरा हुआ थाली के आकार का है। इसके द्वारा अन्य कोई समुद्र वेष्टित नहीं है। इन असंख्यात द्वीपों की कोई गणना नहीं है। मध्यलोक के मध्य में स्थित यह जम्बूद्वीप एक लाख योजन लम्बा-चौड़ा है और इसके भी मध्य में एक लाख योजन ऊँचा सुमेरुपर्वत है।
समुद्रीय जलों का स्वाद-लवण समुद्र लवण के समान रस वाले जल से पूरित है। कालोद एवं पुष्करोद का जल शुद्धोदक के रस-समान रस वाला है। वारुणोद वारुणीरसवत्, क्षीरोद क्षीररस जैसे, घृतोद घृत जैसे तथा इक्षुरस समुद्र इक्षुरस जैसे स्वाद वाला है। इसके बाद के अन्तिम स्वयंभूरमणसमुद्र को छोड़कर शेष सभी समुद्र इक्षुरस जैसे स्वाद वाले जल से युक्त हैं। स्वयंभूरमणसमुद्र के जल का स्वाद शुद्ध जल जैसा है। (अनुयोगद्वार मलधारी हेमचन्द्र वृत्ति २२१)
Elaboration-Among the uncountable sets of continents surrounded by seas the first continent is Jambudveep. This is followed by others in aforesaid order. At the end of this uncountable series of continents surrounded by seas is the Svayambhuramanasamudra. These continents and seas get progressively double in area and surround the preceding one like concentric rings. Only Jambudveep, surrounded by Lavanasamudra, does not surround any sea and is like a circular dish. These numerous masses of land are uncountable. This Jambudweep, located at the center of the middle world is one hundred thousand square yojans in area (one yojan is approximately eight miles). At the center of this Jambudveep is Meru mountain that is one hundred thousand yojans high.
