(१) षड्ज-कण्ठ,वक्षस्थल, तालु, जिह्वा, दन्त और नासिका इन छह स्थानों के संयोग से उत्पन्न होने वाला स्वर 'षड्ज' कहा जाता है।
(२) ऋषभ-ऋषभ का अर्थ बैल है। नाभि से उठकर और कण्ठ एवं शिर से टकराकर बैल (ऋषभ) के समान गर्जना रूप नाद या ध्वनि के समान स्वर।
(३) गांधार-नाभि से समुत्थित एवं कंठ व हृदय से टकराकर तथा नाना प्रकार की गंधों का वाहक स्वर गांधार कहलाता है।
(४) मध्यम-शरीर के मध्यभाग-नाभिप्रदेश में उत्पन्न हुई और उरस् एवं हृदय से टकराकर पुनः नाभिस्थान में आई हुई वायु द्वारा जो उच्चनाद होता है, वह ‘मध्यम' स्वर है।
(५) पंचम-जिस स्वर में नाभिस्थान से उत्पन्न वायु वक्षस्थल, हृदय, कंठ और मस्तक में व्याप्त होकर स्वर रूप में परिणत हो, उसे पंचम स्वर कहते हैं।
(६) धैवत-पूर्वोक्त सभी स्वरों का अनुसंधान करने वाला उनके पीछे दौड़ने वाला स्वर धैवत कहलाता है।
(७) निषाद-सभी स्वरों का अभिभव/पराभव करने वाला स्वर। यह तेजस्वी होने के कारण अन्य स्वरों को दबा देता है। आदित्य (सूर्य) इसका स्वामी है।
ये सातों स्वर जीव और अजीव दोनों पर आश्रित हैं। अर्थात् जीव और अजीव के माध्यम से इनका प्रादुर्भाव हो सकता है।
Elaboration In this discussion on Saat Nama (seven named) seven svar (musical notes) are described. Of many meanings of the word svar here dhvani (sound) or naad (resonating sound) have been chosen. Sound comes under the study of music. According to musicology the definition of svar (musical note) isthat which has regulated vibrations, ascending and descending scale (aaroh and avaroh), softness, melody, and resonance is called svar (musical note). Their are seven kinds of svars (musical notes) including Shadj. In Indian music they are represented by seven symbols-Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni. In western music these symbols are Do (C), Re (D), Me (S), Fa (F), Soh (G), La (A), Si (B). These seven svars (musical notes) have twenty two shruti (short melodious sounds).
