विवेचन-जीव, अजीव आदि प्रत्येक पदार्थ की पहचान नाम से होती है। वस्तु का वाचक शब्द 'नाम' कहलाता है।
इस नाम के एक, दो, तीन आदि दस भेद हैं। किसी विवक्षित पदार्थ के समस्त रूपों के कथन के लिए जितने नामों की आवश्यकता पड़ती है उस पर नाम के ये प्रकार आधारित हैं। जिस एक नाम से समस्त पदार्थों का कथन हो जाय, वह एक नाम है। जैसे 'सत्' । ऐसा कोई भी पदार्थ नहीं जो सत्ता से विहीन हो अतः इस 'सत्' नाम से लोकवर्ती समस्त पदार्थों का एक साथ कथन हो जाने से 'सत्' एक नाम का उदाहरण है। ___ इसी प्रकार जिन दो, तीन, चार, यावत् दस नामों से समस्त विवक्षित पदार्थ कहने योग्य बनते हैं वे क्रमशः दो से लेकर दस नाम तक बताये गये हैं।
Elaboration Every substance including being and non-being is recognized by a name. A word attributed to a thing is called nama or name. Ten classes of names have been mentioned here with numerical values of one to ten. These classes are based on the number of names required to express all possible forms or categories of a thing. Eka nama (One name) is that name by which all things can be expressed. For example sat (existent). There is no substance or thing that is without existence. As the word existent is one single word (noun) that covers all things in this universe, it is an example of the class Eka nama (One-named).
In the same way the number of nouns required to express the desired thing indicates its place among the said list of ten classes of names. (१) एक नाम २०९. से किं तं एगणामे ?
णामाणि जाणि काणि वि दव्याण गुणाण पज्जवाणं च।
तेसिं आगमनिहसे नामं ति परूविया सण्णा॥१७॥ से तं एगणाम।
