Gyani Zail Singh: What do you consider to be a value based life?
Acharya Shri Amrender Muni Ji: Life itself has value. We have been given life. We need to scrutinise it carefully. In my view a value based life must have these three components: Firstly, simplicity (saadgi), secondly, service (seva) and thirdly independance (svavilamban ).There is no rigidness about this being ascribed to any particular religion. It is not the birthright of any one religion only. According to me these qualities are essential for all of humanity. Any human being can access the source by adhering to these principles.
A simple life does not mean we should lead a disorganised or profligate life. Rather it means living a disciplined and moral life a life which is of use to others.
Service is a very hard dharma to adhere to. In the scriptures it is written that service is difficult even for highly accomplished yogis to undertake. In fact service to others is akin to worship of God.
There is a great need for independence. Nowadays we have become very lazy. We are too lazy to do our own work - what help will we be to others? Gyani Zail Singh: How do you apply values in today's scientific / techno culture?
Acharya Shri Amrender Muni Ji: Science is a value. Its value is in making things simple and practical- and providing applicability to all. Science is something which is used by everyone. The laws of science have value. We must use them carefully. The universe is significant in itself. Science should be used for construction and not destruction of the universe.
Let us understand this with the example of fire. With fire we can burn a house down or light a ceremonial yagya or even cook for the hungry. You should try to look at science in the same way.
