________________ SCIENCE OF MANTRA (Excerpts from “Song of the Soul” by Acharya Sushil Kumar Ji Maharaj and Guruji's speech in USA ) General Mantra Knowledge Mantras are based on the science of sound and vibration. A mantra works to release man's hidden powers to improve physical, mental, and spiritual health. Mantras can change our life for the better. A mantra is used in many faiths by other names. For example, the Bible describes sound thus “In the beginning was the Word”. And sound is the end. In Hindu text Shabda Advaita, a word or a sound is said to be Brahma sahodar meaning “Brahma's brother”. Five Limbs of Mantras In the Hindu and Jain traditions, mantra is divided into five parts or limbs, like the branches of a tree. 1. Rishianga is the source of mantra. Mantra was given to us by the ancient sages, the rishis. They experienced these mantras during meditation as mystical sounds (gupta-vidya). These mantras have been handed down to us today. 2. Chandanga, tells us how to properly recite (or chant) the mantra. 3. Devanga, teaches us to invoke and establish a particular devta or a divinity with proper visualization. This divinity might be a devta such as Saraswati, Hanuman, or Quan Yin. They symbolize particular objectives of power such as knowledge or wealth or health. 4. Beejanga, is the seed sound, the root of the mantra. And it holds the power that awakens the prana, or natural spiritual energy sleeping in all people. 131 amrender muni ji maharaj Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
