________________ This is the most important requirement for any disciple. I do not recommend any rules that tie people to a particular religious sect. I believe in change of hearts and minds towards a purer self. 4. Guru seva (service to the Guru) has great significance in our culture... but what is Guru seva exactly? Is just following the Guru's teachings diligently and correctly enough, or is does it involve much greater duties? Certainly, Indian culture stresses the paramount importance of a Guru. In India, the Guru is equated with God, in fact the Guru is given more importance, even, than God. The Guru sows the desire for good (satvik) qualities and pure mental tendencies in his disciples. The responsibility of a true disciple is to stay far away from negative thoughts, habits, tendencies and desires. This is true Guru seva. 5. In your opinion what is the ideal Guru shishya (disciple) relationship? Is it different in the East and the West? Do you think that the Guru shishya relationship has changed or should change to keep pace with modern times? The relationship between a Guru and disciple is completely devoid of any self interest, or selfishness. The Guru is one who gives "sight"; sight which symbolizes knowledge and light. The disciple, using the “sight” of knowledge and discrimination given by the Guru, now proceeds with open eyes on his spiritual path. The relationship between a Guru and disciple remains the same whether it is the East or the West. What is a mantra? Are there different mantras for different people? How does the mantra affect us? A mantra is the condensed form of special (vishisht) energies. The atom, though minute, contains enormous energy. It is the same with mantras. The Word is God- Naad Brahman!
