________________ obscuring karmas as well as the illusory karmas. As a result, he attained omniscience, the purest and enlightened state of soul. Rishabhdev became a Jina. For a long time Bhagwan Rishabhdev continued to propagate his religion having the five great vows as its central theme. When he realized that all his remaining karmas were approaching their end he proceeded to the Ashtapad mountain. On the thirteenth day of the dark half of the month of Magh, a little before noon time, Rishabhdev, along with ten thousand other ascetics, was observing a six day fast without water. He was sitting in meditation in the Paryanka pose. When the moon entered the Abhijit lunar mansion he attained nirvana and got liberated from all sorrows. The Palitana temples are considered the most sacred pilgrimage place (tirth) by the Jain community. There are a total of 1250 temples located on the Shetrunjaya hills, exquisitely carved in marble. The main temple on top of the hill, is dedicated to lord Rishabdev.No one is allowed to sleep overnight including the priest, because the temple city has been built as an abode for the Gods only. Lord Parshwanath: The Twenty Third Tirthankara About 3000 years ago, Parshwa-kumar was born on the 10th day of the dark half of the month of Margashirsh (which usually falls in December) in the city of Varanasi also known as Banaras, in India. His father's name was King Asvasen and mother's name was Queen Vamadevi. Observing the miseries that living beings had to experience in their worldly life, Parshwa-kumar developed a high degree of detachment towards worldly possessions and relationships. At the age of 30, he renounced all his possessions and his family and became a monk. Later, he became known as Parshwanath. He spent most of his time meditating in search of the ultimate truth.
