Kshatriyas are supposed to be “rajasikam” and red is their colour. The left eye of Shiva is the Chandra (moon) netra and it has 16 kalas and 16 trees have come out of the tears from the left eye and those rudrakshams are whitish grey or gold in colour. From the centre eye came the most common rudrakshams which are black in colour. That is the Sudra netram also called the Agni netram and 10 trees came out of that. So the right eye gave 12 trees, left eye 16 trees and central eye 10 trees.

The best or “uttamam” rudraksham seeds are the size of a big Amla. These are the best for wearing for pooja. The second one "madhyamam" or mediocre are the size of a gooseberry.
