through harsh words, or make someone sad, or think badly of someone is considered violence as well. In the Jain tradition, saints as well as householders are expected to follow certain vows - Maha Vrat (vows for monks) and Anu Vrat (limited vows for householders). However it is important to note that if one does not practice non-violence, the meditation done by householders and saints does not bear any fruits and is lifeless and useless.
In the same manner, non possession is integral to our lives. If one keeps accumulating and not sharing one's possessions then inequality is created, and that is a sin. This is one of the reasons that wars are being fought. As per the Jain tradition, society has a right to a part of your earnings.
The Jain tradition compels and inspires one to look at diverse view points that are generous, healthy, and positive. Whatever the issues one may have with others, they should be looked at with an open mind. To overlook any issue and to have a biased view is wrong. Issues arising in the area of family, society and nation can be resolved by looking through the other person's eyes and appreciating their view point.
The most striking aspect of the Jain tradition is “aatma tatva"- the importance of the soul. According to the Jain tradition, all the joys and suffering that you experience are borne by the soul. As the individual does, so he receives. As per the Jain tradition, God or anyone else cannot be blamed for your happiness or suffering.
On the whole, the main aim of the Jain tradition is the upliftment of mankind and there is immense stress placed on human values.
The Jain tradition comes from an ancient lineage however no tradition can survive on its history and past glories alone. It can neither live on these nor be considered praiseworthy based on these. The tradition will not be considered truly alive and flourishing until the followers of the tradition follow its principles with true feeling towards the good of all living things.
