________________ In 1984, in a place called Kushina in Russia a research paper was presented on Epstein waves (EPW). This stated that during the brutal killing of animals in a slaughterhouse, 1040 Megawatts of energy (EPW) were released leading to the occurrence of earthquakes in the region. The cries of animals release vibrations which cause faults in the earth's crust. When there are many such faults, then earthquakes occur. Bhagwan Mahavir was a great scientist. More than 2,500 years ago, the words that he spoke about the causes of earthquakes are now being proved to be true. Lord Mahavir worshipped the Goddess of Non Violence. His shining life is a testimony to that. Ahinsa (non violence) is the basis of world peace. Bhagwan Mahavir has encouraged those religions which are based on non violence. In our thinking and behaviour we should follow the adage: Live and let live. This is one of the most important principles of Lord Mahavir and we should always be alert so as not to harm any living creature even unintentionally. Rev Shri Sushil Kumar Ji Maharaj often said “ Parasparo, upgraho jivanaam”. No species is irrelevant in the scheme of things. If each of us follows this principle in our lives it will slowly spread to the whole world. All living creatures are dependant on each other. Even those flies and mosquitoes which you think of as useless are helping to fertilize the trees and plants. Many years ago in China, all the flies and mosquitoes were killed off. That year there was no harvest of grain or fruits. After searching for the cause, the Government found that the reason was that the pollen which used to be transported by the insects to fertilise the trees could not be carried to its destination because they had been exterminated. There is one incident I would like to relate... Rev Shri Sushil Kumar Ji Maharaj took me with him when he visited a science centre in Canada. I saw that in a glass container a snake and a plant were sealed together. Clearly they were dependant on each other for survival. The snake needed Oxygen which he got from the plant and the plant shantidoot messenger of peace 128 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
