CHAPT E R -8 शुद्धनिश्चयप्रायश्चित्ताधिकार THE REAL EXPIATION
निश्चय प्रायश्चित्त का स्वरूप - The real expiation (prāyaścitta) – वदसमिदिसीलसंजमपरिणामो करणणिग्गहो भावो । सो हवदि पायछित्तं अणवरयं चेव कायव्वो ॥११३॥ व्रत, समिति, शील और संयमरूप परिणाम तथा इन्द्रिय-निग्रहरूप जो भाव है, वह प्रायश्चित्त है। यह (प्रायश्चित्त) निरन्तर करने योग्य है। The dispositions (bhāva) of observing vows (vrata), carefulness (samiti), supplementary vows (śīla), and selfrestraint (samyama), is expiation (prāyascitta); this should be practised continuously.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
The disposition of observing five supreme vows (mahāvrata), five regulations (samiti), the supplementary-vows (śīlavrata)l, and fivefold control of the senses (pańcendriya nirodha), constitute expiation (prāyaścitta).
1 - Withdrawing from the direction - digvirati, from the country or region -desavirati, and from purposeless sinful activity-anarthadandavirati - are three supplementary-vows, called 'guņavrata'. Further, the vow of concentration - sāmāyikavrata, fasting at regular intervals – proşadhopavāsavrata, limiting consumable and non-consumable things - upabhoga-paribhogaparimāņavrata, and partaking of one's food after feeding the ascetic - atithisamvibhāgavrata, are four supplementaryvows, called 'śikṣāvrata'.
