________________ DOCTRINE OF THE JAINAS in using as a salutation the word of dharma-lābhat and in allowing women to find salvation and the Kevalin to live on food. The by far older Devasena, who may perhaps deserve some credit with questions concerning the Dig. (§ 26), traces (Dams. 29) the Yapanīya back to a Svet., 1.e. the Sırıkalasa at Kalyāna (s. 705)2. Among the different customs of the Kästhā-s., which is said to have been established s. 753 by Kumārasena in Nanditata (Dams 33 ff.), we may in this connexion mention the dīksā of female persons. As regards the Müla- and the Māthura-s., Gunaratna refers to them merely with respect to their adherents being distinguishable by the whisks (piccha) of different kind used by them as hand-brooms ($ 145) which he also mentions in connexion with the aforesaid. Acc. to Devasena (Dams. 40ff.) the Māthuras branched off 200 years after the Kāsthā-s., and they did so thanks to a certain Rāmasena at Mathurā who, among others, believed in Padmanandın (i.e. Kundakunda) less than in Bhūtabali and Puspadanta both referred to as pupils of Arhadbalı in the inscriptions (s. b.). The place mentioned concerns Mathurā on the Yamunā, since it is at Dakkhina-Mahurā, i.e. Madurā, where in s 526 the Drāvida-s. 18 said to have originated (Dams 24 ff) Its founder was Vajranandın, a pupil of Pujyapāda (Devanandın). He and his like were less scrupulous about the ahimsā than the traditional teaching wanted it, and so they were liberal in questions concerning nutrition and civil activities 4 Of the Müla-s we learn nothing from Devasena I The other three s. with "dharma-urddhı”. 2 A second Ms has 205 The occurence of Yap, in Khāravela's large inscription discussed by SHAH, Jainism, p 180 f appears to be rather doubtlul For recent investigations see UPADHYE JUB . p 224 ff and DESAI D 163 ff 3 Further characteristics of this samgha under the proviso that he coin cides with the Gopucchikas (comp footnote i on p 46 ) see Śrutasāgara on Chappi 4. For the sake of completeness we mention the prophesy rendered Dams 45f acc to which after 1800 years hence the monk Viracandra of Puskara in the Vindhya mountains in Deccan will destroy the teaching by the Bhullakasamgha-In Nitisára 10 Indranandun speaks of tlie five jain'ābhāsa or false Jains by whom he means the Svet , the Dravida-and Yāpaniya (IA 21, 68, Yăpuliya) samghas, thc Nihpımchas (i e as shown by Gunaratna the Māthura-s ! and the Gopucchihas who may stand for the Kästhā- picchiha by Gunaratna) (but IA 21, 68 instead of Gop (called camariválash Kekipiccha).
