the attainment of dynamic balance called "Samatva. In order to remove the obstacles in the way of attaining this highest potential, Yogic seers in the past dealt with different aspects of man's functioning of the body and mind and explored through precise series of various practices. The purpose of Yogic research, thus, should be to understand the rationale of various yogic practices in the light of our modern knowledge of various sciences and find the utility of yogic techniques for the betterment of common man. Rational understanding of a particular process is one thing and practice another. Without practice no experience is possible. One would not be motivated to practice without rational understanding and conviction. Therefore theory and practice should go hand in hand. Research provides deeper understanding into the processes and practices of Yoga.
The whole area of research in Yoga may be schematically shown as follows:

Yogic research may be considered in two parts: (i) Fundamental, and (ii) Applied.
Fundamental research concentrates mostly on obtaining a knowledge of what is happening and how is it happening and why it is happening. It is meant for the observation of facts about the various yogic practices like Asanas, Pranayama, Bandhas, Mudras, Kriyas and various forms of Meditation, investigated singly or collectively and to understand their working on various psycho-physical levels during their performance or as a result of the performance. Applied research, on the other hand, is based on the observed facts of fundamental research and attempt is made to investigate the suitability or otherwise of these principles and facts when applied to a given situation to derive desirable results. The main area of interest in applied research in yoga is health, fitness and efficiency which has three aspects, namely, Curative, Preventive and Promotive. We shall take a general review of some of the scientiilc studies in yoga conducted so far.
