H. A. Devries, Gharote, Dhanaraj, Giri, R. Moses, Gharote and Ganguly, Therrien, Nayar et al., have shown enough evidence about how Yoga could be gainfully employed in the promotion of physical fitness. Different factors of physical fitness and qualities required in the betterment of performance in various sports activities seem to be effectively deve. loped by intelligent use of varieties of Yogic techniques. Books such as "Yoga and Athletics", "Yoga and Tennis'', "Inner game of Tennis" have been written which indicate the directions of applying Yoga in different fields of physical education and sports activities. Short-coming of the Present Research
Although it is encouraging to note the interest in the scientific research in Yoga, some of the short-comings in the present researches may be noted as follows:
(i) There is a lack of comprehensive understanding about the basic concepts of
Yoga. Without this understanding no useful purpose would be served by
research in Yoga. (ii) In the research reports, distinction between Yoga and meditation creates basic
confusion about Yoga. Meditation is one of the techniques of Yoga. (iii) The programme of yogic practices investigated is found very inadequately
described in the papers. Since, in many studies yogic techniques are used as stimuli, these should be precisely defined and explained. The mode of practising a particular technique is also important in the study of its effects. Each
investigation should be repetitive. (iv) Many-a-time yogic techniques are combined with non-yogic techniques. The
mixed up results of such studies do not really indicate the effects of yogic
techniques clearly. (v) There are some reports of pilot investigations about which further results are
not known. These studies need to be continued further. (vi) Very few therapeutical studies are available where follow-up has been maintained
indicating the utility of yogic treatment. Greater emphasis on follow-up studies is necessary.
Future directions of Yogic Research
The potential areas of research in Yoga may be pointed out as below: (a) Fundamental research about the effects of various individual yogic practices. (b) Applied research in the utilisation of Yogic techniques for the treatment of
various disorders. (c) Standardizing the techniques of Yogic practices. (d) Application of various Yogic routines of short or long duration for the promotion
of specific abilities in games and sports. The role of manipulation of breathing in various psycho-physical activities needs to be explored.
