________________ PRESENTATION OF THE COMMENTRAY AND MSS, MATERIAL The text of the Jñänarnava included in this edition is accompanied by a Sanskrit commentary. Among the MSS. collected by us F & C have an anonymous commentary more or less similar in character. MSS. B, J & K give the commentary of Nayavilása. The make up of the MS. J has suffered. After 202 folios there is a gap and then again we have folios differently numbered 1 to 79. The MS. K also contains the commentary of Nayaviläsa. The portion available coincides neither with the beginning nor with the end, but its end (-) fits remarkably with the beginning of the latter part of J (-:, folios 1 to 79). As thing stands B is incomplete but in this portion it agrees with J. The common portion in J & K show differences in presenting the commentary. The entire K has been adopted continuing it with the latter section of J and the earlier section is adopted only to link it with K. Though apparantly one feels satisfaction with the commentary presented here, but the correct nature and formate of Nayavilasa's commentary can be finally fixed with one more entire MS. of Nayavilása is discovered. On the prose portion there is the commentary of Śrutasagara. The commentary found in J (which accompanied by Nayavilasa's Teeka) shows good deel of independence from Śrutasagara. Under the circumstance the commentary of Śrutasagara and of Nayaviläsa (as in K) so far available are given in the edition for this portion. On those verses where the SK. commentary was not available or were described as Sugamam a concise explainatory commentary is added in square brackets. The Sanskrit text and the commentary are presented in a standardized orthography ignoring the special peculiarities of MSS. Such confusion between $ and Kh, V & B, dy & Jy and conjuncts like, etc. The Jäänärpava has been a popular work for the pious Jain Śravakas. The text of it along with the Dhundhari Bhasha Teeka (rendered into modern Hindi) of Pandit Jayachandra was published by Pannalal Bakaliwal in the Rayachandra Jain Shastramala in 1907 A.D. The need of an exhaustive Hindi Anuwad was well established. So in this edition an exhaustive Hindi Anuwad prepared by Pandit. Balchandraji (while he was working in the Sholapur office) is included. The editor. has added a short Hindi Anuwad of additional verses into square bracket. 1. P. This stands for the photostat copy of the Pattan Manuscript (see a descriptive catalogue of MSS. of Jaina Bhandaras at Patan. Vol. I Palm-leaf MSS., published by the Oriental Research Institute Baroda, 1936) so kindly spared for my use by Muni Shri Punyavijayaji Maharaj, Amedabad.
