In the beautiful town Saketa, situated in the territory of Kosala, Vrsabha was born as the son of Nábbiräja and Marudevī (1-3). Marudevī was quièt in temper and respected by all: her physical form was matchless and her character pure ( 4, *1.8, 5 6). xvi. To herald the birth of a Tirthakara, Kubera showered jewels on the palace of Nābhiräja for a period of six months ( 1 ). One night, in the last quarter, Marudevī saw sixteen dreams, duly described ( 2. *1-8). She felt happy, wore white garments and shone with bright eyes ( 3 ). xvii. With a view to waking up Marudevī, divine bards sang sweet notes describing the advent of morning and its attendant charms. (1, *1-8). Then she left the bed, finished her morning rituals and approached Nabhirāja. She reported her dreams ( duly listed, 3 ) to him. He interpreted them that she would give birth to a Tirthakara. She heard him with great satisfaction ( 2-5). xviii. Marudevī ( who was carrying now) was respectfully looked after and comforted by Śrī, 'Hrī etc. Her movements became slow. On the due day, Vșşabha was born; and there were spontaneous musical notes everywhere to celebrate the occasion (1-3). As the Tirthakara was born, Devendra's seat shook; and Indra arranged for the just born child a solemn birth-bath on the mount Meru in an elaborately divine manner (4, *1-8). The child was an embodiment of all that is glorious and noble; its body had a divine constitution; and it possessed many a virtue. xix.
