कर्नाटक में जैन धर्म
कर्नाटक तथा दक्षिण भारत में जैनधर्म के प्रसार और प्रभाव पर पुरातत्त्वविदों, इतिहासज्ञों और जिज्ञासु मनीषियों ने भी गम्भीर अध्ययन और विचार किया है तथा उसके प्रभाव को धर्म, कला और संस्कृति की दृष्टि से व्यापक एवं महत्वपूर्ण माना है। कर्नाटक में जैनधर्म के इतिहास पर विचार करने से पहले कुछ महत्त्वपूर्ण मनीषियों के विचारों का जान लेना होगा :
श्री एम. एस. रामास्वामी अय्यंगार ने लिखा है-
"No topic of ancient South Indian History is more interesting than the origin and development of Jains, who in times past, profoundly influenced the political, religious and literary institutions of South India."
अर्थात् "दक्षिण भारत के प्राचीन इतिहास का कोई भी विषय इतना अधिक रुचिकर नहीं है जितना कि जैनों की उत्पत्ति और विकास से सम्बन्धित विषय । क्योंकि प्राचीन काल में जैनों ने दक्षिण भारत की राजनीतिक, धार्मिक और साहित्यिक संस्थाओं को बहुत अधिक प्रभावित किया था।"
इसी प्रकार सुप्रसिद्ध पुरातत्वविद् श्री सी. शिवराममूर्ति ने लिखा है
“South India has been a great seat of the Digambara Jain faith " अर्थात् दक्षिण भारत दिगम्बर जैनधर्म का एक बड़ा केन्द्र रहा है।
श्री शिवराममूर्ति की पुस्तक की भूमिका में स्व. प्रधानमन्त्री श्रीमती इन्दिरा गांधी ने लिखा था"Jainism embodies deep investigations into the nature of reality. It has given us the massage of non-violence. It was born in the heart land of India but its influence pervaded all parts of the country. Some of the earliest literature of the Tamil region, is of Jain origin. The great Jain Temples and sculptured monuments of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan are world-renowned."
"Some historians tend to classify the cultural and political development of India into water-tight religious groupings. But a little analysis will show that the evolution of Indian culture was by the union of many streams which make up the might river which it has become."
अर्थात् "जैनधर्म में सत् की प्रकृति का गम्भीर अन्वेषण निहित है। उसने हमें अहिंसा का सन्देश दिया
