4. Desire is an ailment. It is a poison. It is like a fatal serpent. Desire is like an unquenchable fire. It adds to mundaneness. पत्थन्ति भावओ कामे, जे जीवा मोहमोहिया । दुग्गमे भयसंसारे, ते धुवं दुक्खभागिणो || 5 ||
5. जो मोहग्रस्त जीव हृदय से काम-वासना की अभिलाषा करते हैं वे इस दुर्गम और भयावह संसार में निश्चय ही दुःख के भागी होते हैं।
5. Confounded beings who are monomaniacs after libido are predestined to immense misery in this fearsome world.
कामसल्लमणुद्धित्ता, जन्तवो काममुच्छिया। जरामरणकन्तारे, परियत्तन्तवुक्कमं ।।6।
6. काममूर्च्छित प्राणी जब तक कामरूपी शल्य का नाश नहीं कर देते हैं तब तक वे जन्म, जरा और मृत्यु की अटवी में सतत परिभ्रमण करते रहते हैं।
6. Libidinous individuals incessantly wander in their orbit of birth, age and death so long as they venture not to rid themselves of the burning desire.
सदेवमाणुसा कामा, मए पत्ता सहस्ससो ।
ण याहं कामभोगेसु, तित्तपुव्वो कयाइ वि ||7॥
7. देव और मानव के ये कामभोग मैंने हजारों बार प्राप्त किए हैं। अतः पूर्व छोड़े हुए उन कामभोगों के पथ में मैं कदापि नहीं जाऊँगा ।
7. I have enjoyed a thousand times wanton pleasures in the past, divine and human. I shall no more be ensnared by these, since I have long back ridded myself of such indulgences.
तित्तिं कामेसु णासज्ज, पत्तपुव्वं अणन्तसो । दुक्खं बहुविहाकारं, कक्कसं परमासुभं ॥ 8 ॥
8. पूर्व में अनन्त बार प्राप्त होने पर भी इन काम-भोगों से कभी तृप्ति नहीं हुई है। अपितु, इन काम-भोगों से विविध प्रकार के कर्कश और अत्यन्त अशुभ दुःख ही प्राप्त हुए हैं।
8. A million rounds of such indulgences never satiated me. In fact they bred myriad woes of the least desirable kind.
कामाण मग्गणं दुक्खं, तित्ती कामेसु दुल्लभा । पिज्जुज्जोगो परं दुक्खं, तण्हक्खय परं सुहं ॥ 9॥
