8. Like an ignorant being discarding gems for mere oysters a stupid man turns his back to omniscience and opts for vices that explode his morals. Hemlock may not do harm to one's ears, in one's mouth it is instantaneous death. And still human beings are prone to commit such follies.
आजीवत्थं तवो मोत्तुं, तप्पते विविहं बहु।
तवनिस्साए जीवन्तो, तवाजीवं तु जीवती।।१।। 9. आजीविका के लिये तप को छोड़कर विविध रूपों में अनेक प्रकार का तप करता है। तप का आश्रय करके जीने वाला तपोमय जीवन को जीता है।
9. Wise people never harness their austerities to earn their livelihood. They dedicate themselves to austerities and penances in right earnest.
णाणमेवोवजीवन्तो, चरित्तं करणं तहा।
लिंग च जीवणढाए, अविसुद्धं ति जीवती।।10।। ___ 10. कोई ज्ञान से जीवन-यापन करते हैं। कुछ चारित्रिक क्रिया से जीवन जीते हैं। जिन्होंने वेष (मनिवेष) को जीविका का साधन बनाया है, वे अशुद्ध-दोषपूर्ण जीवनयापन करते हैं।
10. Certain individuals expend their knowledge for earning their bread. C'ertain others encash their morals. Those who thus put their monkhood to bread-earning are vicious.
विज्जामन्तोपदेसेहिं, दूतीसंपेसणेहिं वा।
भावीभवोवदेसेहि, अविसुद्धं ति जीवति।।11।' 11. विद्या, मन्त्र-तन्त्र के उपदेश से, दूतिक-संदेशवाहक के कार्य से, भविष्य के कथन से अर्थात् निमित्तशास्त्र से और भवों की बातें बताते हुए उपदेश के माध्यम से जो जीवन निर्वाह करते हैं वे दोषपूर्ण जीवन जीते हैं। ... 11. They are equally sinful who teach occultism, run errands, predict astrology and who preach and choose such vocations for their bread.
मूलकोउयकम्मेहं, भासापणइएहि या।
अक्खाइओवदेसेहिं, अविसुद्धं तु जीवति।।12।। इन्दनागेण अरहता इसिणा बुइतं।
