________________ 20 KĀRTTIKKYĀNUPREKŞA b) THE TATTVĀRTHA-SŪTRA AND ITS COMMENTARIES It is already noted above that the Tattvārthasūtra (IX, 2, 7) mentions anuprekşā as an agency of samvara; and the twelve anuprekşās enumerated in the Sūtra are elaborated by various commentators. The Tattvärthādhi. gama-bhāsya' and the Sarvārthasiddhi are the two basic sources, with much in common both in thoughts and expressions; and they have given a positive lead to the subsequent commentaries in fixing the scope, in supplying the thought-capital and in outlining the details of each anuprekşā. It may be seen here how some important and exhaustive commentaries have elaborated these very ideas. The Rajavārttika* of Akalanka (c. last quarter of the 7th century A. D.) not only incorporates practically the whole of the exposition of the Sarvärthasiddhi on the anuprekşās but also adds more precise definitions and supplements as well as elaborates with technical details some of its points. Sometimes, as in the case of bodhidurlabha-a., the technical details are strikingly elaborated. Akalanka impresses one as a typical Naiyāyika with a marvellous mastery over Jaina dogmatic details. The Bhäsyānusārint of Siddhasena (c. 7th to 9th century of the Vikrama era) is an exhaustive exposition of the T.-bhāsya. But on the Sūtras in question, it primarily interprets and now and then elaborately explains with some dogmatical details the very text of the Bhāşya. What is striking is that there is no further contribution to or development of the thought-pattern of anupreksā, as we find on the section of dhyāna etc. where some additional verses are quoted by Siddhasena. The Tattvārtha-slokavāttika® of Vidyānanda (C. A. D. 775-840) has hardly anything to add on the anuprekşā Sūtras beyond repeating the vārttikas of Akalanka in a string and then rounding off the explanation with a couple of verses. There is no further advance on the thought-pattern and supplementation to the ideas already recorded by the Sarvärthasiddhi. 1) SUKHALALAJI SANGHAVI: Tattvāratha-sūtra ( Banaras 1939), Intro., pp. 36 ff. 2) In the Rāyacandra Jaina Sastramāla, Bombay 1931. 3) For editions, K.
