In many Telugu words this r is used optionally after the initial, as in పక్క, కింద, తోవ, సుక్కు which are, in bookish Telugu, written

The letter is sometimes inserted to
prevent elision, we పొదరిల్లు, గంగిరెద్దు, బొమ్మ రిల్లు, ఉస్సురనుచు,
in prosody, stands for Xra, a foot composed of a short between two long syllables.
ra [Tel. short for day.] In addressing intimate friends or very low class persons, this is used as a suffix; thus, 5200, ఎందుకు, ఏమిరా, ఎందుకురా.
In ancient Telugu, when it was under influence of the Kanarese literature the letter was used, but it is now obsolete. It is called శకటరేఫము, ఆలఘు రేఫము or బండి 'ర' while the is called మంచి 'ర' or లఘురేఫము, The ఱ is never used in Sanskrit words. It is said to have
been pronounced hard, and to have had
the force of two sounds; so that in there are supposed to be four R sounds included, which is absurd on the face of it. According to the ancient spelling తరుచు means to churn, తఱంచు thick. పెర is a bee hive, Bee other, strange. is ourd, Besos to grow. means a root, Beso different. x means to hide, xoxo to boil. In modern Telugu the is unknown and thus both sets of words are spelt alike. The ancient poets distinguished these sounds, never allowing o rhyme with. Modern Telugu poets uch as the transistor of the Bhagavata lisregard this distinction. In recent years attempts have been made to revive the use of this obsolete letter, but without success.
