GITA-RAHASYA OR KARMA-YOGA
श्रीभगवानुवाच। काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः। महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्धयेनमिह वैरिणम् ॥ ३७॥ धूमेनात्रियते वह्निर्यथादर्शो मलेन च। यथाल्बेनावृतो गर्भस्तथा तेनेदमावृतम् ॥ ३८ ॥ आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरिणा। कामरूपेण कौन्तेय दुष्पूरेणानलेन च ॥ ३९॥ इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिरस्याधिष्ठानमुच्यते। एतैर्विमोहयत्येष ज्ञानमावृत्य देहिनम् ॥ ४० ॥ तस्मात्त्वमिन्द्रियाण्यादौ नियम्य भरतर्षभ।
पाप्मानं प्रजहि ह्येनं ज्ञानविज्ञाननाशनम् ॥४१॥ himself desiring it, as though coerced ? The Blessed Lord said: (37) Know that in this matter, the enemy is that Desire, which is most greedy and most sinful, born out of the rajas constituent, and that Anger; (38) just as fire is covered by smoke, or a mirror by dust, or as the embryo is enveloped by the amnion, so has everything been enveloped by it; (39) O Kaunteya ! that which is an insatiable fire, that constant enemy of Jñānins in the shape of Desire, has enveloped all Knowledge.
[This is a repetition of the statement of Manu that: na jātu kāmaḥ kāmānām upabhogena śāmyati 1 havişā kranavartmeva bhūya evābhivardhate 11
(Manu. 2.94); that is, "Desire is never satisfied by the enjoyment of the objects of Desire; it grows more and more as does the fire
to which fuel is added" (See Gi. Ra. Ch. V, p. 143)]. (40) The Senses, the Mind and the Reason are said to be the adhişthāna (that is, the house, or fortress) of it; by the support of these, it puts aside Knowledge and throws the man into confusion. (41) Therefore, O most excellent Bhārata ! first control the senses and destroy this sinner, who is the destroyer of Jñāna (Spiritual Knowledge) and Vijñāna (specified Knowledge).
