5. Indriya pratisanleenata or vivikta shayyasan-To observe absolute continence and to refrain from using comfortable bed and seat for the purpose of increasing concentration in meditation.
6. Kayaklesh-To tolerate afflictions of cold and hot climate. To inflict the body with unusual heat. To discipline the body by various methods and means.
(b) Abhyantar tap (inner or mental austerities)-That which is primarily related to mental activities and in absence of manifestation which is not revealed to everybody, is called abhyantar tap. This is also of six types
1. Prayashchitt-To atone for the sins done due to ignorance or under illusion, and to abstain from committing sins again.
2. Vinaya-To humbly respect seniors, great men with lofty spiritual conduct, and other respectable persons.

3. Vaiyavritya (ministration)-To serve sthavirs (senior ascetics staying at one place), ailing, those observing austerities, newly initiated, and seniors, to the best of one's abilities.
4. Svadhyaya-To indulge in all the five facets of studies, including reciting scriptures and asking questions.
5. Dhyan-To be engrossed in pious meditation-spiritual and pure.
6. Vyutsarga-To get free of mental and physical possessions to the best of one's abilities. In other words to reduce fondness and increase equanimity.
V. Viryachar-Virya means power or energy. To apply all one's power and energy with complete and unitary concentration to the above mentioned 36 types of pious activities and indulge in continued efforts in the direction of liberation is called viryachar.
