विवेचन - उपासकदशांग सूत्र में श्रमण भगवान महावीर के दस विशिष्ट श्रावकों के जीवन वृत्तान्त हैं | इसके दस अध्ययनों में प्रत्येक में एक-एक श्रावक के लौकिक तथा लोकोत्तर वैभव का वर्णन है। साथ ही श्रावक के अणुव्रत और शिक्षाव्रतों का स्वरूप भी बताया है।
इसमें भगवान महावीर के वे विशिष्ट श्रावक ही सम्मिलित हैं जिनके जीवन व साधना में अनोखा साम्य भाव है। सभी श्रावक अतुल वैभव - सम्पन्न थे तथा राजा व प्रजा के प्रिय थे। सभी के पास पाँच सौ हल में जोती जा सके इतनी भूमि थी। गौवंश के अतिरिक्त अन्य कोई पशुधन नहीं था। ये दसों ही भगवान महावीर के प्रथम उपदेश से प्रभावित हो बारह व्रतधारी श्रावक बने थे। व्रत धारण के पश्चात् पन्द्रहवें वर्ष में गृहस्थाश्रम की गतिविधियों से मुक्त हो पौषधशाला में आराधनारत हो गए थे। कुछ मास बीतने पर ११ प्रतिमाएँ धारण कर उनकी आराधना में संलग्न हो गए थे। इन सभी ने एक-एक मास की संलेखना कर देह त्यागी और सभी प्रथम देवलोक में उत्पन्न हुए। ये सभी चार पल्योपम की आयु पूर्ण कर महाविदेह क्षेत्र में जन्म लेंगे और सिद्ध बनेंगे।
Elaboration-Upasakadashang Sutra contains the life stories of ten special shravak disciples of Bhagavan Mahavir. Each of its ten chapters has the details of the mundane and divine grandeur of one of these shravaks. Also included are the discussions about the anuvrats and shikshavrats (supporting vows of spiritual discipline).

This work is confined to only those shravaks of Bhagavan Mahavir who had uncanny similarities both in terms of their lives as well as spiritual practices. They all were enormously wealthy and much liked by the kings as well as masses. They all had large tracts of land that could be tilled only with the help of five hundred ploughs. The only cattle or animals they owned belonged to the bovine family. All these ten individuals were impressed by the first discourse of Bhagavan Mahavir and became shravaks with 12 vows.
