________________ Nirvana kalika. 10 Jain Education Intern beginning of his life in and about Mathura, and after about 3 or 4 years was directed to proceed to Patliputra where by sheer force of intellect he became a close friend of the King Murandarai. The details of his life about the time can be had from the Prabhavaka Charitra. He also showed his accomplishment in the "Mantra-Shastra" to King Muranda. Haribhadra-Suri in his commentary on Avashyaka-Sutra while citing instances of different kinds of intellect cites Padliptasuri as an instance of Vaineyaki-Buddhi. A ball of thread, waxed together was sent to the Sabha of King Muranda for the end of the thread being discovered without cutting up the ball. Nobody could do it and Padliptasuri was requested to do so. By putting the thread-ball in hot water he seperated the wax from the ball and the thread-end was taken out. Similarly a stick both ends of which were equally shaped was sent to King Muranda for finding out the root-end of the stick. Padliptasuri by putting it in water took out the root-end being the heavier part. Before Haribhadrasuri the great Bhashyakara Jinabhadra Gani also refers in his Bhashya to Palittasuri and his Prakrit novel Tarangavati as also Vasavadatta of Subandhu. Padlipta thus gained complete influence at the Court of King Muranda. We do not know exactly when he travelled over to Broach but it is possible that he must have done so when at the age of about 20 years he travelled to visit the holy places of pilgrimage viz. Shastunjaya Girnar. He then visited. Valabhi and Tankapura the place where Nagarjuna lived. Thenceforward for the greater part of his life Padlipta resided at Manakhetapura. There also he became a great friend of King Krishna who was much impressed by Padlipta's literary qualifications. For Private & Personal Use Only Introduction. 10 www.jainelibrary.org
