LISHK M.A. (Maths.), Ph.D. (Jaina Astronomy) Govt. In-Service Training Centre, ___Patiala-147001 (Pb.) Jambūdvipa, an isle of Jambū, is the circular land mass alternately surrounded by ocean rings and land masses, with the mount Meru located at its centre. Jambūdvīpa is divided into seven regions namely Bharata, Haimavata, Hari, Videha, Ramyaka, Hairanyavata and Airāvata. These regions are the natural creations due to the placement of six mountains viz. Himavāna, Mahāhimavāna, Nisadha, Nila, Rukmi, and Siķhari. The North-Southern stretch of Bharata region is 526 6/19 yojanas. The stretch goes on doubling till we reach Videha region after which it goes on reducing by one-half. Two rivers flow in each region. Various mathematical descriptions of Jambūdvipa and its contents represent a very beautiful picture of the geographical world as depicted by Her Holiness Aryikaratna Sri Jnanamati Mataji in her learned work *Jaina Geography'. Jaina Geography is a unique field for deep scientific research. The concept of Jambūdvipa is the fundamental key to unlock the glorious mysteries of Jaina Geography Here it is worth-mentioning that geographical knowledge as extant in Jaina canonical literature is not merely a piece of fiction as it may appear to an amateur scholar. As a matter of fact, in order to make out the underlying sense implied in the Jaina geographical texts, attention should be focussed on several points such as given below: Firstly, the terminology used in the agamas has to be, of course, understood with reference to the time of compilation of the texts. Secondly, different systems of length units should be kept in view while Jain Educationa international For Personal and Private Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
