________________ THE JAIN CONFERENCE HERALD. The fourth defect is want of that love and self-sacrifice which conduce to good management. There is much envy, ignorance and self-conceit which retard progress. If one man founds an institution, the other instead of helping the institution with more money and sympathy, starts another and in the end both institutions suffer and sometimes are closed. Everybody likes to build new temples even though there is no dearth of them, in cities like Ahmedabad Patan, &c; everybody forms a new club even though one such is existing near his very home, every body wants to open a new school even though there are many in his town or city. But none is self-restrained enough to spend the same money on those institutions already existing so to make them more permanent and self-supporting. So what is wanted is unity and respect and love for charity for charity's sake and not for satisfying one's conceit and love of show. as The fifth thing to which I beg to draw your attention is that with the change of times and associations, the modes and objects of charities should also be changed. A thing which suited people of first century may not suit those of 10th century, that which suited people of tenth century may not suit those of twentieth century. Even that which suits us to day may not suit us 25 years hence. Hence we must change with the times. Those charities which suited our fore-fathers do not suit us now. The way in which we spend our money does not suit us. What is necessary is that we should change the objects, grooves and modes in which we spend our money. Formerly much of the commerce of India was in our hands; now we, are nowhere. So money should be spent upon educating our children in commerce and helping our young in following that pursuit. There was no science in middle ages and so we had no necessity to spend our money after it. Now its knowledge is in-dispensable in capturing commerce, so we should spend much after it. Formerly we were very rich, now we are poor, and so we should curtail our expenditure on pageant and festivities. Formerly there were no-or very few famines in the land and consequently no necessity of founding orphanages, now famine is of daily occurence and orphanages are a dire necessity for the simple reason that preachers of other religions, may not induce our co-religionists to turn Christians or Mahomedans. Formerly we supported Bhojaks, now we don't do it and so schools for teaching the art of singing should be established for the elevation of soul and concentration and meditation. Formerly there were native physicians who administered medicines to patients for very little. Now diseases are increasing, Doctors! fees have increased, medicines are dear and so it is absolutely necessary to open free dispensaries under competent hands. Formerly education was free, now it is so dear and so it is necessary that free schools should be opened. And there are soar directions in which our money and energy
