NOTES ON
fa=When c is joined to a letter or a combination of letters as ā, it shows that the substitute consonant to which it is attached is doubled. Thus in 'णों दिना रुदिते' we have f where र is इत्. The substitute of which takes place for fear is therefore doubled; we have accordingly you for alca. Similarly, we have a in the Sûtra'siml7' 81312€ a Sûtra which is not commented upon in our work; अंकोठ is accordingly changed to अंकोल्ल. fərq = When is joined to a letter or a combination of letters as , the preceding vowel is lengthened. Thus in the Sûtra 'FETAT: Er or the CETAT:' (vide p. 21), we have श्लक् where is इत्. Here elision is taught by a शित् letter and so after the dropping of zal and 77, the preceding vowel is lengthened; we have thus FIAT as Nom. Plu. and Acc. Plu. In another Sûtra 'fig agaft a' we have fit and in both of which z is ; the optional change of the final letter of 79977 to and 3 (elision ) is therefore to be understood as characterized by the lengthening of the preceding vowel. agar is consequently changed to TUTTE and TT where the vowel en is lengthened. fea-When & is joined to a letter or a combination of letters as a, what is taught in connection with it by the Sûtra has a nazalized pronunciation. r atta #6956' 813188-& Sætra not commented upon by Lakshmîdhara— teaches that the # of Flyn, wyal, FIUVET, and afayTriat is dropped. Now here since ge has a prefixed to or joined to it the pronunciation of the vowel that is left after the dropping of # is nazalized. In Fršet, Fort &c. the pronunciation of 3 is like that of nazalized 3. q and ay are used in some Sätras and signify respectively the masculine and the neuter genders.
