Now a knowledge of this kind can be arrived at not simply through the knowledge of Fratel or similarity. It may also be arrived at through the knowledge of aard or dissimilarity. For instance, a man may know that a parti. cular animal is called it through the knowledge of its dissimilarity with other animals in having a long neck &c. The Vritti explains it clearly-'अत्र च वैधम्र्योपमितिमपि मन्यन्ते टीकाकृतः । यथा च अतिदीर्घग्रीवादिपश्वन्तरवैधर्म्यज्ञानादुष्ट्रे करमपदवाच्यता. ग्रहः' न्याय०, p. 17. Now the point of introducing this Sûtra in the text is that just as in this Sutra the word साधर्म्य is an उपलक्षण of वैधh, that is, implies वैधh in addition to implying साधर्म्य. ('स्वप्रतिपादकत्वे सति स्वेतरप्रतिपादकत्वमुपलक्षणम्'), so the Sutra 'किप:' means that we should shorten the vowel not only of words ending in the suffix fərq, but also of words like सोमपा ending in the suffix विच्. सोमपा+सु is thus equal to सोमप+सु. Now the Sutra 'प्रायो लुक् कग-' p. 14 is applicable; but the Sutra 'नात्प:' p. 14 forbids its application, because q follows 31. q is then changed to व् by 'पो वः' p. 14 and the word सोमव is declined like राम. Pages 86-87. श्लगनपि सोः ॥ २ । २ । २९ ॥ p.86-नृनपि ङसिङसोः ॥२।२। २७ ॥-p. 87. These Sûtras deal with the declension of words ending in इ and उ. (1) श्लगनपि सो:-The Nom. Sing. Ter. स् of words ending in s or उ is dropped, but not in the Neu. The s or उ is then lengthened. (1) e. g. गिरी, बुद्धी, तरू, घेणू; but दहि, महुं ( because they are Neu.). (2) पुंसो जसो डउ डओ-In the case of Mas. words ending in इ and उ, the Nom. Plu.
