The initial, followed by a conjunct consonant, is changed to ओ
मुद्गरः - मोग्गरो । पुरः - पोग्गरो ।
Here is to be understood as the original in a word and not the which may have resulted from the operation of a Satra ( लाक्षणिक ). How is this known? From the Sūtra 'सूक्ष्मेोत : ' which proves this How ? For one might say that the Sūtra is useless. In सूक्ष्म, ऊ can be shortened by 'संयोगे' and then उ may be changed to ओ by 'स्तौ'. It will not do to say that the Sûtra is given to make the rule optional; for, in that case, Lakshmidhara might have pronounced the Sätra as 'सूक्ष्मेद्वा', he must not have used ऊतः. The Sutra 'सूक्ष्मेोत: ' thus seems without any purpose. In order that it may not be so it is a ч, a demonstrator of the fact that the Sûtra '' does not apply to the in a word, which is not original, but the result of the tion of a rule (लाक्षणिक ).

In उद्व्यूढ, ऊ is changed to ई— उद्व्यूढः- उब्वीढो.
Hemachandra_makes the change optional— ईवद्व्यूढे' कुमा० चरि०, Appen, p. 21, and gives two forms उब्वीढं - उब्वूढं । Trivikrama does the same in his Vritti.

In स्थूणा &c. ऊ is necessarily changed to ओ. Owing to the force of the Sūtra 'बहुलम्', the rule is optional in the case of स्थूणा and
तूण.
