Kumärila has argued as follows:-"At the time (of the Cognition of the absence of defects) the excellences do not function on being themselves cognised ; in fact, it is by mere presence that they help in the cognising of the absence of defects".--[Shlokavärtika 1. 1. 2; 67.]
