– કૃતજ્ઞતા :Gratitude is a fruit of great cultivation, you cannot find it amongst gross people. -

- French proverb આ લોકમાં પ્રથમ તો હજાર મનુષ્યોને વિષે પણ ઉપકાર કરનાર મળી આવવો દુર્લભ છે. પરંતુ પોતાના ઉપર થયેલા ઉપકારને માનનાર તો લાખોમાં પણ મળવો દુર્લભ છે.
હે પંડિતો તમે ઉત્તમ અને અધમના વિચાર કરવા શામાટે તર્ક-વિતર્ક કરો છો? કૃતજ્ઞ જેવો કોઈ ઉત્તમ નથી અને કતબ કરતાં બીજો કોઈ અધમ નથી.
નેપોલીયનને પણ કૃતજ્ઞતાનો કડવો અનુભવ થયેલો અને તેનું પત્થર જેવું હૃદય કાંપી ઉઠેલું ત્યારે તેના હૃદયમાંથી નીકળેલા ઉદગારો :

નેપોલીયન કહે છે કે તમે જાણો છો કે દુનિયામાં બધી કમનસીબીઓમાં અસહ્યમાં અસહ્ય વસ્તુ કઈ છે? પોતે જ જવાબ આપે છે કે માણસની નીચ અને ભયંકર કૃતજ્ઞતા. પંચેન્દ્રિય જીવોમાં જેમ મનુષ્ય ભવ દુલર્ભ છે તેમ ગુણોમાં કૃતજ્ઞતાનો ગુણ અતિદુર્લભ છે.
