________________ Acknowledgements It is a pleasant duty to thank those who have helped me in one way or the other with my work. I have no words to express adequately my indebtedness to Prof. R. B. Athavale who has in the course of stimulating discussions over the past several years, given me the benefit of his profound knowledge of Alamkāra-śästra. I cannot express in words what I owe to the late Pandit Balacharya Khuperkar Shastri of Kolhapur, a very eminent and erudite Pandit, gifted with rare critical insight. I am deeply indebted to the late Professor K. V. Abhyankar, who was my guide for the Doctorate thesis and to my Professors, the Jlate Dr. A. N. Upadhye, and Dr. A. M.
