________________ Vol. XXXI, 2007 ON THE FIRST SENTENCE OF VYUTPATTIVĀDA:... oneself, property), puruṣa means 'man'. The relation between rājā' and 'svatva' is nirūpitava and the relation between svatva and purusa is aśrayatā. Needless to say, nirūpitatva and aśrayatā are not presented by any word (pada-apratipädyd) and thus they are ākānksā-bhāsya or apparent by samsargamaryādā. This makes the śābdabodha rājanirūpitasvatvāśrayaḥ puruṣaḥ”. Here, svatva appears as a padārtha and thus it is a prakāra (qualifier) and it is not ākāñksābhāsya. Now let us see the sābdabodha of (2b), which is a case of compound form of the above: 'rāja-purusah'. There are only two words here "rājan' and 'puruṣaḥ'. They mean the same as stated above. Since there is no word to represent the meaning svatvāśraya here, it appears as the samsarga between ‘rājan' and 'puruṣa' and needless to say that the is samsarga is ākānksābhāsya. It is just a 'relation' here unlike in the above case. Therefore, just rājasvatvavān puruṣaḥ is the sābdabodha of (2a). If svatva alone is considered to be the relation, then the śābdabodha will be in the form of 'svatvasambandhena rājaviśistah purusah'. Let us see this in the following diagram: nirūpita aśraya | rājā svatva puruṣaḥ rājan nas SU purus rājñah räjäah puruṣaḥ purusaḥ Diagram 4 svatvavān räjä swatvaoãn p D urusah rājā purusah rājan purus rājapursah Diagram 5
