भगवान को केवलज्ञान-प्राप्ति श्रमण भगवान महावीर को दीक्षा लिए बारह वर्ष पूर्ण हो गये। तेरहवें वर्ष के छठे महीने ग्रीष्म के वैशाख शुक्ला दशमी के दिन विजय मुहूर्त में उत्तराफाल्गुनी नक्षत्र में दिन का अंतिम प्रहर जब सूर्य पश्चिम दिशा की तरफ ढल रहा था तब जृम्भक गाँव के बाहर बहने वाली ऋजुबालिका नदी के तट पर श्यामाक गृहपति के खेत में, शाल-वृक्ष के नीचे उकडू आसन होकर गोदोहासन से बैठे सूर्य की आतापना ले रहे थे। उस दिन भगवान का निर्जल षष्ठभक्त (बेला) का तप था। तभी अज्ञान एवं दुःख से सम्पूर्ण निवृत्ति दिलाने वाला अनुत्तर श्रेष्ठ केवलज्ञान, केवलदर्शन उत्पन्न हुआ। भगवान अर्हत, जिन, केवली बने।

ATTAINING KEVAL-JNANA Twelve years passed since Shraman Bhagavan Mahavir got initiated. It was the sixth month of the thirteenth year. It was the tenth day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakha and the shadows had moved to the east during the last quarter of the day. On the auspicious moment called Vijaya when the moon entered the Uttaraphalguni lunar mansion outside of Jrimbhak village on the bank of Rijubaluka river in the farm belonging to citizen Shyamak near a Shaal tree he was meditating squatting in the Godohak posture enduring the heat of the sun. At the same time he was also observing the Chhatthabhakt penance (fasting for two days). At that time he acquired the supreme and perfect Keval-jnana and Keval-darshan that completely liberate one from ignorance and miseries. Bhagavan Mahavir became Arhat, Jina, all knowing and Kevali.
