________________ The compound of the Vidyalays is large, but is not adequate for outdoor games. Still on our compound, boys play volleyball and basketball. For other sports and athletic activities we have to move to the Maidan. Sabha, is a vigilant institution too. On the last day of the weeklong golden jubilee celebration of Shree Jain Vidyalaya at the Netaji Indoor Stadium recently, it pledged to start of new unit of Shree Jain Vidyalaya in Howrah. A fine rapport exists among the Management, staff members, students and the S.S. Jain Sabha. The result is the creation of a family-like atmosphere in which it is a joy to work. The teachers of the Vidyalaya, thus, are treated as members fo the large Jain family. This amiable ambience enables every issue - whether it is the question of higher pay or better benefits that the government has given to other aided institutions of the State, to be amicably resolved. The six-storeyed building, the Howrah unit of Shree Jain Vidyalaya (at 25/1, Bon Behari Bose Road, near Sandhya Bazar), is a dream come ture. It has started off very well and bright future awaits it with nearly 2,500 students in the second year. The girls section is in morning and the boys' in the day. The Sabha's scheme to distribute texbooks free among needy students of rural Bengal is very heartening. Some 20 or 25 schools are selected each year and the Headmasters recommend the names of the needy students. They come to Shree Jain Vidyalaya and receive the sets of complete texts at a function. During my long tenure I have found one thing: where there is goodness, a sincere will to work, an intimate and open deal and consultation about how to work and what to work on, things get smoother and move faster, in spite of hurdles on the way. It may be noted that the former Principal, Mr Ramanand Tiwari, appointed in 1958, retired only in 1987, having completed his five-year term of extension after 60 and the next, Mr K.L. Gupta, too, enjoyed his full extension. The idea is to set up large book banks in district of West Bengal so that more and more students may be benefited. The Sabha's munificence also goes to the disabled who are supplied with Jaipur foot. Behind its success story one man's contribution is outstanding. During these three decades and a half of the Vidyalay's existence on the present premises, Mr. Sardarmal Kankaria has been with us, barring only just a few years, as its honorary secretary. An industrialist, he has a clear parception and deep understanding of eduactional problems. Principal Shree Jain Vidyalaya, Calcutta The parent-body of the Vidyalaya, Shree S.S.
