________________ THE JAIN PROPHET Jain Acharya Shri Buddhisagarsuris warji (Ocean of Knowledge ) I The name of this great Prophet is well known to the Jains, but several other persons of other religions who are interested in the life and teaching of this wonderful man, would like to know him and so it would be very useful if some glimpses of his life may be given here. He was really an ocean of knowledge and his name signifies the vast knowledge and Soul Force which are apparent in his life and in the various books which he has written. Bharat is well known for the Birth of Divine persons, Saints, Tirthankars, Philosophers and Devotees of God and the hero of this Page was one of them. It is the promise of God in Bhagvat Gita that when ever religion will be disappcaring, whenever good persons will be oppressed, some avatari person is born for the restoration of religion and for bringing peace and prosperity in the world. We know this from the birth of Lord Mahavir, Buddha, Shri Krishna, Shri Ram at different periods, when it was necessary. Acharya Shri Hemchandracharyaji, Shri Anandgbanji and Shri Yashovijayji were. also born at different times and they have done wonderful works which are well known to Jains. Such persons are born with certain knowledge which they had accomplished during the present life. They acquired Salvation after leaving the knowledge in the books as a legacy for posterity.

________________ 341 d Buddhi prabha Birth:-- This great man was born in Samvat 1930 (1874 A. D.) on a Shivratri Day in Vijapur in a cultivator's family. His mother's name was Ambabai and his father's name was Shivdas. His name was Becharbhai. He was helping his parents in the field and at home and passed his childhood in this condition without any means of getting education. One day when he was sleeping in the cradle, a large serpant came near him, the mother on seeing this shuddered and made prayers and the serpant went away. In the evening one Mahant Ishwardasji predicted that this child is very lucky in future. When he was sent to the school, he paased successfully in all standards of Gujarati Schol and the teachers wondered at his intellect. His parents died in 1901 and he came in connection with the Jains and Jain Saints [ 10-6-64 and came to the conclusion to leave the world and pass a life of Jain Muni. He devoted all his time in reading various books and various Shashtras of differant religions, and acquired vast knowledge. He than began to write books and devoted all his time in self realization. The Maharaja of Baroda invited him to give religious lactures in his palace and Maharaja Shri Sayaji Rao was greatly impressed with his wonderfull life and Yoga. He came in connection with Mahatma Gandhiji, Lala Lajpatrai, Pandit Malaviya etc. and discussed with them about the prosperity of India. Oh Bhatat, don't beg self Government and Independe- ace from anybody. Learn from the lives of the Divine person of your land and act accordingly. Those who wint independence are not expected to beg for it, and that could not remain for ever. Be fit by developing your spiritual forces. Be loyal and faithfull to the nation. Don't cut your own feet. You are the heart of the peace of the whole world. Every nation will become prosperous by your peaceful attitude and they will get light from it in future. The whole World will be benefitted in future from you. Oh Bharat, the whole World will ger peace of the Soul, from the lives of the saints of India who had spiritual power. V Life of a Jain Muni : The life of a Jain Muni is full of complete austerity. He keeps no money. He gives up his house and the whole family. Buddhisagarji was a Bhramchari throughout his life and had not married. The Jain Muni has no house of his own. They generally live in a monastry built by the public. They get up early in the morning. Their early prayers take more than an hour. Then they give lactures from the Shastras to a large number of men and women, who are collected there. Then they go for getting their meals to the houses of some persons Jains as well as non-Jains. They do not keep any vessels of any metal. You have to become free from it, if you want to lift your Soul to a very high stage. Character is the basis for acquisition of knowledge, wealth as well as success Knowledge without character is only a false show. Therefore every person should acauire highest morality, virtues, regard for others, compassion and humanity. Then he can realise the power of his Soul. XVI - Knowledge : Knowledge is of two kinds. The knowledge that [ 47 you get from schools and colleges will give you a study of the subject which you want to learn It will give you high Degree from the University, will give you high position in life and will give you wealth, comfortable life and happiness. It may be useful to you in the society, but if along with this knowledge, you have not got spiritual knowledge by which you can separate the h-ppiness of body and the happiness of the Soul, it can not uplift your Soul for the future life. Therefore it is absolutely necessery that every pers n who wants real and permanent happiness should study the substance of all the religions and acquire the real knowledge of the Soul. XVII Religion:-- Several persons believe that religion is a duty. It is not true that it is restricted in duty only. The aim and

You have to realize that your Soul has the same power as the Almighty, and that it can be one with the Infinite and that whatever may be the condition of your body it so happens because, it is so ordained by your Karmas in the past, and if you can acquire the peace of mind in whatever situation you are placed by Destiny. That is the real religion. Munishri have written volumes upon this true nature of religion and has proved that Jainism shows the path of Salvation. The lives of Tirthankars proved it and the life of Munishri was also of the same type. He respected all the religions equally and says that there is only one God whether you call him by the name of Mahavir, Parashnath, Ram, Krishna or Allah. There [ 10-6-64 should be unity inspite of diversity of all the religions and the followers of different religions should not quarral with each other in the name of religion. For the Jains, he has stated that all the differerent sections as Digambars, Swetambars and Sthanakvasis are all one. They should give up their differences and they should work unitedly for the welfare of all and for the realization of the Soul. Real knowledge dose not consist in the knowledge of lauguages and oratary, but it consists in the simplicity of life, regard for others, no desire, not to injure the feelings of anybody, and desire to help everybody for getting right knowledge. He Preached for unity of all. He said that the people should be loyal to the Government and that the Government should respect the voice of the nation, and should work for the prosperity of all, and if the Government and the people work in that way, the people of Bharat are sure to be prosperous and happy. The Ruler is entrusted with power by the people and if he makes abuse of this trust, there will be no unity and there can be no prosperity. All the human beings have the same feelings and they have a right to live and therefore there should be no oppression. All the enimals have got a right to live and therefore there should be no slaughter of dumb animals. Every nation comes to the top by its high [ 65 deeds and non-vilence, and the moment that it forgets this commandment of God, they are sure to fall. In his books he has given valuable advise to all the nations. XIX Death : Munishti had no fear of death. He knew that it is only a change of the body and that his Soul was to leave the body, he made preparation for it, got all the books which were ready for print to be published soon and told his followers that the period of his life was over and that he is preparing for it. Iu Samvat 1981 (A. D. 1925) when people came to request him to pass his monsoon, he said who is going to make another monsoon? and he wrote a long letter to his follower Mohanlal Hemchand of Padra in tne month of Jeth and wrote in it "By death one has to pass from one stage to another. He asked his followers to take him to Vijapur, his birth place, and then called all his disciples and followers and told them if they had to ask anything, if anybody was to come. He gave his last advise, gave blessings to all, sat in Samadhi uttering the words. Soham soham. Their was light upon his face and he left his World on Jeth Vadi 3rd. He had no pain, and he passed rway with complete peace of mind. Gujarat is fortunate for having given birth to a Mahatma of highest type like Acharya Sbri Buddhisagarspriji and who passed away only 37 years ago. He has left so many books as a heritage to the public and now we have to learn highest ideals of life and highest precepts of religion from his life and teachings. His last words : Before leaving this World, he called all his disciples and his followers before him and told them Oh!: rcligious people, by becoming Jain Saints, you have succeeded in youa human life. Now do such acts that you may not have to come again in this World, because there may come many occasions for falling into temptation. Therefore have control over selfish nature. Follow the advise of your elders. Make progress by keeping unity with all and all your religious works. Do not forget your Soul and let it remain as a Light in all your actions. Although there is Kaliyuga or Panchamkal, you are lucky that you have takeo hirth as a Human Being, that you are healthy in body and born in high family and that some of you have left this World and become Saint.

You have got this nice opp- ortunity therefore don't waste your iife. This human body is the only stage from which you can artain to the highest stage by your virtuous life. You have got it by your high deeds of merit in the past. you can not ger human life by spending any amount of money. pect towards him and purity your Soul by your faith in God and devotion to him. Do all that you can for help ing every human being in happiness and misery by considering them like your own Soul. Be firm in your own Soul by your firm faith, knowledge and high character, without being attracted or tempted in any afairs of the World and remember that it is the only path for getting salvation. Many difficulties and obstacles may come in your way, your mind may be tempted to wordly things, but remove all these thoughts from your mind, maintain peace of mind and follow the path of salvation. This is my last advise to all the Sadhus, Shravaks and Shravikas, and if you follow it, you will become immortal. Therefore take advantage of this opportunity of coming into human life.
