(Its Gujarati translation was done by Hemasagarauri in 1966) Pradyumnasuri of the 14th century, Digambara Brahma Jinadasa (1520 v.s.), Padmasagaraji of the 1650 v.s., and Ksama Kalyaanaji of the 1839 v.s. are some of the writers to have worked upon the Samaraicca Kaha. In this tradition Padmavijayaji Maharaja of the 2000 v.s. has written Samaraditya Kevali Ras. He was a disciple of Uttamavijayaji in the lineage of Hiravijayasunsvaraji, who is said to have enlightened the Mogul Emperor Akabara. Padmavijayaji has composed about fifty-five thousand verses out of which 86 have been so far published. Padmavijayaji has written a number of works in Gujarati, out of which Samaraditya Kevali Ras is significant. The author commenced writing in 1839 v.$. on the third day of the black fortnight of the Asvin month and completed in 1842 v.s. in Vasantapancami. The Ras has been edited and published in 1842 v.s. on the basis of a manuscript in the L. D. Institute of Indology. Samaraditya portrays nine births (of a mortal) in nine divisions. There are in all 199.Dhal (a mode of singing) in which Ras is composed. The original Samaraicca Kaha being in Prakrit was out of reach for a majority of the people. So the author recast it into Gujarati in order to make it accessible to a wider section of the public. He added a versified musical form also to it. The mode of singing being familiar to the people will ring in their ears and only words would have to be substituted. It may be noted that, on account of this feasibility in the Jaina literature of those times, a vast body of literature of this type has proliferated. When we take into consideration the fact that this work has been written by a person who has relinquished the world since childhood and yet possessed a deep knowledge of the Desis and folksongs and even of classical music, we are astonished. ' As stated above, the poet of this Ras has utilised in all 199 Dhal, a mode of singing. The poet has not repeated a single desi excepting two or three Dhals. viz. An Jaina poets have utilized those popular songs' tarja in their compositions by noting the first line or a refrain of those popular songs. In this way we are enabled to have a glimpse the richness of the songs. Sometime a desi used to be named after a metre or a work. In this way the lines or refrains which have been preserved are noteworthy even from the point of view of poetry. As noted above, these lines include the languages of Rajasthani Page #97 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Punjab and Vraj. These lines may alos serve as recognition-tags, as in the following: ai pritamsun ekwar, saluni bolo ho' L aj anand thayo, premanan vadal varsyan, dahado sohilo' avo hari lasariyavala ' Odhav madhavane kahejo' 'kahan avoji ora re, kahun ek vataldi ' These lines preserve the rare remnants of the folksongs of those days and hence very valuable. These desis are significant from the historical point of view also. Some of the folksongs, garba, ras can be traced to these lines and accordingly we can get an idea about their age. If a tradition of singing these desis is maintained, then it should be recorded and studied, as their essence lies in its being lyrical. Similar is the case with its classical rag which was mentioned at times. Desis also used to be cast in classical rag. To cite a few instances pasaji ho aho mere lalana, division 5 Dhal 2 This is sung in Dhamala rag also. be karjodi tam re bhadra vinve, division 5 Dhal 9 This desi is also sung in gaudi rag. One more thing to be noted about this rag or desi is that they are not moulded into any rag or desi without any rhyme or reason. Propriety of the occassion is always kept in view. As we know, Sikharini and vasantatilaka are appropriate for devotional compositions, or mandakranta is fit for the message-theme, or upajati or arya is fit to be the vehicle for descriptive theme or vasantatilaka is suitable for love-in-separation. The same view is kept in the classical music also. If there is a description of battle. kadakhani desi is suitable as in the fifth division. 19th Dhal. Bhayani 1. Travana The fourth chapter of the Bshaddesi (1) (EBD.) describes Bhanhas according to Yastika. There the first Bhasa of the Takkaraga is called Travana (BD.2, 132, v.16; p. 138, v. 39). Similarly the ninth Bhasa of the Pancama-raga is called Travani (p.134, v.28; p. 164, 100-101) and it is called desa-sambhava (v-101). In the Notes (virmarsa) the editors have observed that travana or travana is not known as a geographical name. In Rajasekhara's Kavyamimamsa (first half of the tenth century), Travana occurs twice as the name of a country. In the list of the countries in the Western region of India is mentioned Travana along with Surastra, Daseraka, Bhtgukaccha, Kaccha, Anarta, Arbuda etc. (ch. 17, p. 233). Again in the seventh chapter while describing the regional charactersitics of poetry-recitation it is said that the poets of Surastra, Travana and allied regions recite even Sanskrit poetry with a touch of Apabhraisa. Accordingly Travana was the name of a country in the west in the vicinity of Surastra, Kaccha, etc. It was possibly in Rajasthan. 2. Harsapuri The third Bhasa of the Malavakaisika Raga is called Harsapuri (BD. 2, p. 150, v. 65). The editors say that Harsapura is not known as a geographical name (p. 311, note 25). Harsapura was known as a city and an administrative province in Gujarat during the Calukya period. It is mentioned in a copperplate grant (dated 910-911 A.C.) of the period of the Rastrakuta king. Krsna-II. There the province is called harsapura-ardhastama-sata (i.e. Harsapura-750). It is identified with Harsol in the Sabarkantha district of the present-day Gujarat. In the form harsapura the vowel is lenghtened metri staghfiguitai TEEN. THP?I. Shmi.! Buirr. Por 1992: put 2. 19%). Shastri, 1972, p. 374). 3. Satavahanika The second Bhasa of the Kakubha Raga is called Satavahanika (BD.2, p. 134, v.23 ; the ms. reading is salavahanika) or Satavahini (p.154, v.74 ; to be emended as satavahani). The name derives from the name of the royal poet Satavahana (Pk. salavahana, salahana), the famous literary figure and author of the Prakrit anthology Gahakosa or Gahasattasai, who ruled at Prattisthana (modern Paithan in Maharashtra) during the first or second century of the Christian era. In the Prakrit section of the Siddhahema-sabdanusasana, Hemacandra, while connecting Pk. salavahana, satahana with Sk. satavahana, has given salahani bhasa as an illustration of the occurrence of the form salahana. It is quite tempting to connect this with the Satavahanika Bhasa of BD. In that case bhasa in Hemacandra's illustration (which is most probably taken over from some earlier source) does not mean 'language', but a type of Gramaragas. 4. Ambaheri The twelfth Bhasa of the Takka Raga is called Ambaheri (BD.2, p. 132, v.19; the ms. reading here is ambahiri ; p. 144, v.54). The editors have observed (p.310, note 20) that Ambahera is not known to be a geographical name. They suggest the connection of that term with Ambara, modern Amer near Jaipur in Rajasthan. Now it is obvious that some of the names of the Bhasas do not have any connection with a geographical place-name, e.g. Lalita, Kolahali, Madhuri, Vesari etc. Page #107 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ 102 The word ammahiraya occurs in the sense of 'lullaby' in Apabhramsa poems of 9th and 10th century A.C.(?). For example in the description of a cowherds settlement it is said : katthai DiMbhau pariyaMdijjaiha, ammAhIrau geu jhuNijjau / (Svayambhu's Paumacariya, 24, 13,8) 'In some places a lullaby song is being sung while rocking the child (in a craddle)'. In the same poet's Harivamsapurana, Yasoda is described in the following lines as rocking the child Krsna in the craddle (hallaru, Guj. halardu) and sing a lullaby: Heft 37TTUI, TRIGE F85 I (5,1,9) In Puspadanta's Mahapurana child Rsabha is described in the followng line as being rocked in a craddle while a sweet lullaby is being sung : ufeigs 3 HERCUT, HCA $-fa HEERGUTI (4,4,13) There, some initial lines of the lullaby are also given. Accordingly, it is suggested that Ambahiri as the name of Bhasa (which as a class being related to the Gramaragas) may be the same as Ap. ammahiraya 'lullaby'. ambaheri is called desyakhya in BD. That qualifier can be also interpreted as 'the name of which is based on / derives from a regional dialect'. Incidentally, Ap. ammahiraya can be derived from amma mummy' + hiraya 'diamond'. In the lullabies that were sung the child would have been addressed or referred to as 'O you mine - your mummy's diamond'. Hence a lullaby came to be called ammahiraya. See my paper in Gujarati. Nalurdi. parnu in Apabhramsa literature published in 1970 and later included in my collection Sabdaparisilan (!073). pp. 101-106. Vesara BD. states that according to Durgasakti, Ragas themselves According to the editors are known as Vesara. (BD.2, p. 108). Raga is another name of Vesara Giti. Again BD. has cited Durgasakti to explain the term Vesara. According to the latter Vesara is an alternative form of Vegasara. Vegasara is so called because svaras move with speed (vegasara) (p. 108). But a little further on p. 116, it is said that Vesaras are so called because the speed of svaras is seen in them (i.e. it is an alternative form of vega-svara). Editors have noted that the usual meaning of Sk. vesara is 'mule', and that Monier Williams' Sanskrit-English dictionary has given vegasara also with the same meaning. Now vegasara is attested considerably later than vesara (from the Kathasaritsagara and from Hemcandra's Abhidhana-cintamani (which gives vesara, vegasara and asvatara as synonyms). Most probably vegasara is a later creation to explain vesara etymologically. Sk. vegasara 'moving speedily' would become veasara in Prakrit and later vesara. So working backwardly vegasara was formed. This attempt to provide vesara with artificial etymology to match with its meaning is evident from the BD. passages referred to above which once equate vesara with vegasara and second time with vegasvara. vesara 'mule' is a hybrid animal. Whether it implies that Vesara Giti was called so because of a mixture of two types in its structure is for the musicologists to tell. 6. desi In BD. 1, 2 the word desi qualifies dhvani (m.). In 1,16 it qualifies marga (m.). In 5,346 it qualifies raga (m.). Elsewhere it qualifies nrtta (n.), sabda (m.), naman (n.) etc. Formally desi is feminine. At BD. 1,14 it is said: gIyate yA'nurAgeNa svadeze dezirucyate / (Here desi is modified as desi to suit the metre). Page #109 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ 104 The title brhaddesi means 'the great work on desi ragas'. How to account for the feminine form desi in all these usages? It is of course derived from desa 'region'. Adjectives formed from desa are desya, desiya: The form desi functioning as an adjective is evidently a changed form of desya. In several Sanskrit words in later usage we find that their final -ya changes to -7, under the influence of Prakrit. Note the following instances (noted in MW.): aucitI < aucitya, cAturI - cAturya, mAdhurI - mAdhurya, vaicitrI < vaicitrya, vaidagdhI - vaidagdhya, vaiduSI - vaiduSya. < < (See H. C. Bhayani, 'Etymalogical Notes', Berlines Indologische Studies, 8, 1995, p.9) These forms are attested from comparatively late Sanskrit texts. So also the word desi. The explanation of the term vesara as vegasara or vegasvara, the place-name base of the bhasas travana and harsapuriya, the use of the form desi indicate linguistically rather a late date for BD. So also the term ambaheri in the section taken over from Yastika's work. Under "Desinamala' 5.22 Hemacandra has noted Pk. grua for which he has given, besides others, two meaning - equivalents in Sk.: f&'besmeared' and FATET 'greasy'. In Hala's Gahakosa 909 occurs thrice. In verse no. 22 in the compound expression vaNNa-ghia-tuppa-muhie~ for which there is a variant reading quo-f8137-FT- EG. In verse no. 520 also we have vaNNa-ghia-tuppa-muhi. In verse no. 289 occurs tuppANaNA which is rendered by a commentator as qafmana. In Bhuvanapala's recension we have tuppAlayA for tuppANaNA, rendered as afihistant in the commentary. In the Jain Agama 'Dasasrutaskandha' (8122) occurs qum 'whose ends are bemeared with oil.' In Hemacandra's Siddhahema grammar aMkolla-tella-tuppaM 'bemeared with the oil of Ankostha'is cited in the commentary on 8-1-200. In the 'Desi Sabda Kosa' tuppita = mrakSita from 'Anuyogadvara-curni' and gruqy = fire from 'Vipakas'ruta' are noted. In the 'Gahakosa' occurs the denominative (9954 (with variants tuppavia, tuppalia) 'besmeared with ghee' in verse 529. In 'Setubandha' (15,38) 909 is used in the sense of 'ghee'. Past passive participle 3gfu 'besmeared of the verb formed from 709 occurs in Jain Agamika texts. For example : #G3f74a-UETfuq-fonfetal-TT ('Prasnavyaankarana", chapter 3, in the description of thieves) having limbs drenched and besmeared with oil emitted from perspiration'. At 'Siddhahema' 8,1 the verb 211045 is noted as synonymous with Sk.p . arusa etc. occur frequently in Prakrit literature in the sense of besmeared with grease'. For NIA derivatives see CDIAL 4865 (gue / 71104). 9145 occurs in the sense of 'a greasy substance like oil, ghee etc.' in NIA languages. 3. From Sk. 94, Pk. Hore to besmear' is derived H. HURCH, G. HICU 'butter' etc. See CDIAL 10378. 4. If like coppaD and mrakS we take tupp as primarily meaning 'to besmear', then you and fucy 'besmeared' can be regarded as formed like phuTTa and phuTTiya, tuTTa and tuTTiya etc. and tuppav from tuppa as a denominative with tuppavia as past passive participle. Later semantic development as 'besmearing', 'grease', 'ghee' can account for 509/94 ghee'. Turner indicates that que and qu9 are related. In a few Prakrit words we find palatal consonants (c, j) taking the place of dentals (t, d) or conversely 1 for c and d forj. See Pischel's Comparative Grammar of Prakrit Languages, 215, 216. We can compare ciTThai and tiSThati, cuccha and tuccha with cuppa and tuppa. Page #112 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ 107 In veiw of the variant ghia-litta for ghia-tuppa and the citation 310 -8-909 in the 'Siddhahema', I find untenable Tieken's view that in verse 20 tuppa means dhRta (i.e. ghia-tuppa is a compound of two synonyms) and that the meaning afera is based on a misunderstanding (Herman Tieken, 'Hala's Sattasai as a source of pseudo-Desi words', Bulletin D'etudes Indiennes, 10, 1992. p. 235). The fragmentary results of this research appeared in his Beobachtungen uber die Sprache des buddhistischen Urkanons and Buddhist philology has continued to benefit from his insights. Of cource I remain most interested in the progress of your re-appraisal of the testimony of Acaranga MSS for the language of Amg. texts, and hopeful that you can publish more of the information gleaned. Would that someone might be inspired to produce facsimile reproductions of the principal MSS, in emulation of the Satapitaka Series. That is something that ought to be demanded at every conference, before the MSS disintegrate entirely. Your findings seem to confirm that a return to the method of Jacobi's 1882 edition of Acaranga would be appropriate. In case of variation, he gave in italics the most antique-looking reading that happened to be available (e.g.... natam bhavati... ovavaiye...), even although, on his own showing, such readings can always be put down to an instinct to clarify the meaning. Thus he rightly could take note of effects like 1.2 maya me pita Page #123 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ 118 me and 1.6 mataram piyaram. But I do not believe that it is safe to refer to this (as he did) as a 'retention of -t-: one is presumably less likely to find a -t- in a purely Prakrit form like bhaya. With parinna, and with the same sort of effect in hirannenam suvannenam elsewhere (ZDMG 1880), his policy was to archaize with parinna and suvannenam. I take the opportunity to congratulate you on your explanation of locative -ammi, which seems to solve one of the most perplexing problems of all. It goes well with the texts' failure to distinguish between 0- and u-, and with Buhler's suggestion that graphic confusion between n and n was involved : that would seem to justify Jacobi in his willingness to emend u-, !!-, and in (irrespective of the actual readings, as I understand him). Schubring's identification of two groups within the Acararga MSS, and of separate strata of verse and prose material, seems to hint that critical editing is possible (though he did not make the attempt, and it would be a thankless task without access to facsimiles of the MSS).
