________________ UKTI-VYAKTI-PRAKARANA 65 of cases, as in the Old Kysali of the Ukti-vyakti, we have -awa, which represerts both OIA. -špaya (e. g. binawa 39/27 = vajñāpayati) and -aya- without'p (the -w- from the -p- being a late MIA. addition), as for instance, in • melawa= melayati, MIA. *melawaï<*melapayati' In a goodo number of cases, the Old Kosali causative is just like the ordinary transitive or intransitive form, without -Ūw- or -.- or -awch affix, but with the proper long vowel of OIA. e. g. chāa = chāwaï<whādayati (36/6), jāla<jvālayati 38/17), bāna 1 varnayati (41/23 ), santāwa ( 44/25 : santāpayati), säha (sādhayati : 41/31 ); sts. nirupa= nirūpayati (41/21); băta = vartayati ( 40/21 ); umisa = unmisrayati ( 41/18 ), cheda = *chidrayati (41/19); upháda (45/24); āňka = ankayati (41/20), măija = mārjayati (42/21), sāmeta = sammețayati beside samita ( 44/3); dulala = durlāțayati (44/20), unāļa = unnadayati (19/5); dhanu goa (44/24 : gopayati); etc. Proper NIA. causatives of all of these, with short vowel in the roat and dwan affix, are found or are possible : e. g. bāna, but *banāwa; jāla, but · *jalāwa; cf. hāla, beside halūwa ( 49/3, 4). (13/27), karāwiha (21/19 : future form ), karāwia (21/16, passivè caus.); khanāwanta (21/14 - khānayan, present participle ); -harāvoa ( 38/11), cūdawa ( 39/1 : cūțţayati); ghatăwa ( 39/3); badhāwa ( 40/14), batāuja ( 40/13); nacāwa ( 41/2); pasijāwa (51/7) beside pasija (57/16 ); bilawa (42/2), jiyāwa=jiāwa (46/25), cabā<cabāwa (46/27 ) beside câba (45/3); sowarāwa (48/24) beside soñara; nibatāwa ( 48/14") beside nibața ; calāwa (49/1); bujhāwa (49/15) beside būjha=budhyati ; dāpawa= darpayati (5/21); sūshūwa (51/18); soāwa = svāpayati (50/17), jagāwa ( 50/20), sikhāwa ( 50/23); nacāwa ( 51/6) beside nāca, denominative from nāca =nrtya?; khelāwa ( 52/17); dará (14/16); sahāwa ( 49/11, beside saha). There is another causative affix -ra-, -la- which is found in some roots. This is also of OIA. origin from -cla- as a causative affix in a verb like pati--pālayati. Examples are : baisāra =baïsārà ( 59/25)= upavesayati, from *upavisālayati; dekhāla=darsayati (38/11); makhārce (40/17 = mrakşayati);(?) ujuara, beside ujuta = ujjati or ubjati (51/20). In later times, this -āla- affix became more prominent as in Hindi causatives : e. g. denā-dilānā, sīnā—silānā, dekhrūdikhānā, dikhlānā, sonā—sulānā, nahānā-nahlānā; etc. The characteristic denominative affix in OIA. was -āya- : drumaa yate<druma, krşņāyate<krşņa, etc. In later Skt., following evidently Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
