NOTES-VIII. 1. 67-91.
67–83. These Sutras describe the several changes that 37T in Sanskrit words undergoes.
67. garoff and granti do not come under this rule but are to be traced to care and start both of which exist in Sanskrit. cagrat qarTuhaa TAT:.
68. ga is one of the car terminations which requires the gre of the first 37, this 341 after the die becomes under the present rule 37 in Prakrit.
70. The rule should have rather been: A long vowel followed by 315691T is shortened; which is one of the fundamental rules in Prakrit. If however the part is dropped by VIII. 1. 29, the long vowel will naturally remain intact.
77. 174f has several meanings; when it means motherin law it is changed to 3455. Similarly 3tasi in 83 below.
84. This is one of the fundamental rules in Prakrit: A long vowel followed by a conjunct consonant is shortened. falsequat is CEFF7797. gta , if one of the conjuncts is dropped or if there be no conjunct at all the vowel would remain as it is. 3711 standt for 3*137 where 3ft cannot be shortened. In fat and 599 which stand for fat and get the conjunct is dropped and hence the original long vowel remains in fat while in 5579 the short vowel is lengthened.
85–98. Changes of s.
85. In Prakrit g as well as 37 are pronounced long as well as short. 5 and 3 thus become g and zit, the quantity of the word however is not changed when they are followed by conjuncts. Compare 116 bellow.
88. According to this rule qera is changed into qe; how is then grei for grear to be explained ? Hemacandra proposes that cu may in sk., be a synonym of qfare from which Gry Acc. may be had.
91. gra is changed to <37 if the word occurs at the beginning of a sentence.
