________________ 36 NOTES-VIII. iv. 335-339. गुणैः न सपत् कीर्तिः परं ( जनाः ) लिखितानि फलानि भुञ्जन्ति । केसरी कपर्दिकामपि ( बोड्डिअ) न लभते गजाः लक्षैः गृह्यन्ते ॥ “ By virtues (one can get ) only fame but not wealth; peop'e get fruit which is written ( on their forehead by destiny ); a lion is not worth even a cowrie but elephants cost lacs." Here we get guns and a terē to illustrate the rule. 336. In अपभ्रंश the Ablative sing. termination after. अ ending words is हे or हु. ___वृक्षात् गृह्णाति फलानि जनः कटुमल्लवान् वर्जयति । तथापि महाद्रुमः सुजन इत्र तान् उत्सङ्गे धरति ॥ " People take fruits from a tree but neglect the bitter leaves ; and yet the great tree, like a good man. places them on its lap." Here we have वच्छ, or वच्छहु. 337. In अपभ्रश, the Ablative plural termination after' अ ending words is g. दूरोड्डानेन पतितः खलः आत्मानं जन (च) मारयति । यथा गिरिशृङ्गेभ्यः पतिता शिला अन्यदपि चूर्णीकरोति ॥ " A wicked man, by taking a long jump, kills himself and other people; a stone fallen from the mountain-top: powders others along with itself. " गिरेसिंगहु is Ablative phural. . 338. The Gen. sing. termination of अ ending words, is सु, हो, स्सु. यः गुणान् गोपयति आत्मीयान् प्रकटान् करोनि परस्य। तस्य अह कलियुगे दुर्लभस्य बलिं करोमि सुजनत्य ॥ “I offer my salutation to the good man, rare in this Kali-age, who conceals his own virtues and manifests those •of others.” We get here परम्सु, तसु, दुलहहो as Genitives. 339. The Genitive plural terminations after 3 ending words is हं. तृणानां तृतीया भगी नापि (=नैव); तानि अवटनटे वसन्ति । अथ जनः लगित्वा उत्तरति अथ सह स्वय मज्जन्ति ॥ " There is no third possible course for grass; it grows on therislops of a ditch; either men eross (the ditch)
