चातक कि कथनेन निघृण वारंवारम् ।
सागरे भृते विमलजलेन लभसे न एकामपि धाराम् ॥ . "0 ruthless च तक, what is the use of repeatedly telling you that you •will not get a single drop (lit. धारा-shower) even though the ocean is full of clear water. "
अस्मिन् जन्मनि अन्यस्मिन्नपि गौरि तं दद्याः कान्तम् ।
गजानां मत्तानां त्यक्तांकुशानां यः सगच्छते हमन् ॥ “ O Gauri, may you give me in this life and also in another such a husband, who smilingly meets mad elephants uninanageable ( even ) by means of goads." 384. बले: अभ्यर्थने मधुमयनो लबुकीभूतः सोऽपि ।
यदि इच्छय महत्त्वं ( वहुत्तणउं) दत्त मा मार्गयत कमपि ॥ " Even that Madhumathana, God Vishnu, became a dwarf while begging (alms ) from Bali; if therefore you desire greatness, give ( to others ) but do not beg of any
'one."
385. विधिविनाटयतु ग्रहाः पीडयन्तु मा धन्ये विषादं कुरु ।
संपदं कर्षामि वेषमिव यदि अर्घति (=स्यात्) व्यवसायः ॥ “Let my luck be unfavourable; let the stars trouble me; O fair one, do not be depressed. I shall drag money like, my dress if only I can get work.” Note that y means यदि, if, see iv. 422. 386. खड्गविसाधितं यत्र लभामहे तत्र देशे यामः ।
रणदुर्भिक्षण भन्नाः विना युद्धेन न वलामहे ॥ “We shall go to that country where we shall get some 'work for our sword, destitute as we are by the famine of fight, we cannot live in happiness without fight.” 387. कुन्जर स्मर मा सल्लकीः सरलान् श्वासान् मा मुच्च ।
कवलाः ये प्राप्ताः विधिवशेन तांश्चर मानं मा मुञ्च ॥ "o elephant, do not think of the सल्लकी plants ; do not breathe heavy (longstraight) sighs, eat only those morsels whick luck brings you, do not give up your self-respect." Here सुमरि, मेल्लि and चरि are the Imperative forms.
भ्रमर अत्रापि निम्बे कति (चित् ) दिवसान् विलम्बस्व । घनपत्रवान् छायाबहुलो फुल्लति यावत्कदम्बः ॥
