________________ NOTES-VIII. i. 180–187. according to instances found in literature, as initial or noninitial. Thus, , et etc., may or may not be dropped in the first syllable of the second member of a compound word; e.g., सुहकर or सुहयर from sk. शुभकर or सुखकर; or सुहद सुहअ from sk. Jeg. in Jain Prakrit and Ardha-Magadhi is often changed to a; e. g. 9a, 1TT, TTTTT, TTT etc., Hemacandra, however, tries to explain the change of # to - by iv. 447. 180. When 7, 77, 7, e etc, are dropped the remaining stauf i.e. 37 or 31, if preceded by 37 or 341, is pronounced like a lightly articulate (लघुप्रयत्नतर) य. Thus नगर becomes नयर; काचमणि becomes कायमणि; पाताल becomes पायाल and दयालु, after first dropping its natural य् , becomes दयालू with a लघुप्रयत्नतरयकारश्रुति. This यश्रुति is possible only after अवर्ण according to Flemacandra. Thus TFT according to him would be TBTFT and not see. The Jain manuscripts however have this Jata in instances like atzea and also after , , s; and in some cases even after 3. The rule as given by A1064 seems to be better: 371CT Stični quit grocent #19 i sta 970fema, i.e. non initial 37 and should be pronounced like . He adds further: प्रायोग्रहणतश्चात्र कैश्चित्प्राकृतकोविदः । यत्र नश्यति सौभाग्यं तत्र लोपो न Hitat ll HAHSET II 2. 181-186. These rules describe changes of in sk words. 181. gah has two meanings; a dwarf and a kind of flower. shout becomes go when it does not mean a flower. 183. leta when it means a hunter and also a kind of melical herb ( Marathi चिराईत or काढेकिराईत) changes its n to 9. If the arta be a hunter in disguise is not changed to 7. Thus we have THT ETT GOTT, we salute god a disguised as a hunter ( to fight with Stefa). 187. This is one of the fundamental rules of Prakrit. The five hard and soft aspirates, ख, घ, थ, ध and भ are regarded as conjuncts of क, ग, त, द and ब with the aspirate ह.
